Super Eagles Head Coach, Sunday Oliseh, has prepared himself well for the job he just assumed only on Wednesday in Abuja.
Twice, in recent past, Oliseh’s name came up while the Nigeria Football Federation was looking for a national team coach. His name came up before Samson Siasia got the nod in 2010.
Same happened when Stephen Keshi was appointed in 2012. A former Eagles coach, Jo Bonfrere, said on Thursday that he was not surprised about the hiring of Oliseh just as he was sure the former international also saw it coming.
“I spoke with him and he knew he would coach Nigeria one day. He has always wanted to. He prepared himself for the job. On paper, he is qualified and good for the job,” he said. The Dutch however noted that experience was a big minus to the chances of Oliseh to excel.
“He has not coached any big team or country before. I think the federation is aware of this before giving him the job.
The assistants should be able to help him since he knows the right things to do to get results,” Bonfere added. NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, also revealed that Oliseh had a long list of 70 Nigerian players good enough for the national team.
“He was preparing for the job almost on a daily basis and we were shocked during our discussion with him that he was prepared for the task. It’s like he knew the job will come someday,” Pinnick said. Oliseh’s first task is to lead Eagles to Tanzania for a crunch away tie in the AFCON 2017 qualifying series.
