No fewer than six site workers escaped death by the whiskers when a two-storey building under construction crashed to its foundation in Nekede, Owerri, the Imo State capital.
The crash site is located behind Seat of Wisdom Lodge (Hostel) at Umuoforocha village just beside the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede.
When our correspondent visited the scene of the incident, the debris and rubble of the collapsed building were still untouched as onlookers from within and outside the neighbourhood were still coming to see the extent of damage.
Residents lamented the mysterious collapse of the building which they said was approaching completion.
According to some of the students living within the vicinity, who witnessed the incidence, the building collapsed just immediately after the workers left the site having finished for the day’s work.
A student, who confided in our reporter, said: “It is almost impossible to imagine that this is the same house where people had worked the previous day and where more than six of the workers usually slept.”
Continuing he said: “In fact, one of the site workers who was having his rest in the building was called on phone by a friend and immediately he left this place that yesterday afternoon, the building collapsed. He was simply saved by God’s Grace. That is why many people said some people died in there. It’s not true. Nobody died in there”.
