Man Burns Wife to Death in Supermarket For Demanding a Divorce

A husband was arrested, charged and convicted of murder after setting his wife on fire because she wanted a divorce, prosecutors in Russia said. Now, the man who killed his estranged wife by throwing gasoline on her and setting her on fire while she was at work, has been jailed.

Surveillance video of the attack shows the 25-year-old victim on fire and running through the store. 33-year-old Alexander Efimov drank a bottle of vodka and was three times over the drink driving limit when he was arrested.

He initially claimed that the attack was his wife’s fault because she refused to get back with him.

The couple separated several years ago, and a court heard that Efimov constantly harassed her, accusing her of sleeping with other men, of cheating on him when they were together and begging her to get back with him.

On the day of the attack, Efimov came to the supermarket where she worked, and asked again if she will get back with him.

He told her that if she refused, he will kill her, and when she said no, he threw gasoline on her and set her on fire. She took off her clothes and shoppers tried to extinguish the flames.

Paramedics were called and she was taken to a hospital, where she died a day later. The court found him guilty of assault, death threats and murder committed with extreme cruelty.

He was sentenced to 18 years hard labor.
