Obasanjo Shouldn’t Have Torn PDP Card, Says Akinfenwa
Several weeks after former President Olusegun Obasanjo tore his Peoples Democratic Party membership card in public, the National Chairman, Alliance for Democracy, Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa, has frowned at the former President’s action.
Suggesting such action was childish, Akinfenwa said at the 9th edition of ‘The Frontliners,’ an enlightenment programme put up by the veteran journalist for young journalists in Osun State that “as an elderly statesman, he ought not to have done that publicly.”
He also said in a statement that if the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, would follow his antecedent and refused to be manipulated by desperate politicians, he would conduct free and fair polls.
He also advised INEC that if the use of smart card readers would mar the success of the elections by disenfranchising some voters, then it should be discarded by the commission.
Akinfenwa also expressed optimism that the AD would someday produce Nigeria’s president, adding that the party had endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan for today’s election “because he has performed better than all Nigeria’s past presidents put together.” The veteran journalist also decried the splitting of Afenifere into many factions, admonishing the Yoruba to come together as one entity so as to build on the good legacy of the past Yoruba leaders.
The Vice-Chairman, Association of Veteran Journalists, Mr. Kayode Adedire, said that the programme was aimed at keeping members of the public abreast of all the happenings in their environment and to make leaders in all sectors accountable to the people.
