Senate President David Mark has complained about the malfunctioning of the card readers in some polling units across the country, even as he urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to swiftly salvage the situation.
The senate president, according to This Day, made these complaints after casting his vote in Otukpo Ward 1, Otukpo, Benue State.
Mark who admitted that the presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday was largely peaceful in his constituency, lamented that the malfunctioning of the card readers could prevent many people from participating in the elections.
He said: “The Otukpo Ward 1 to me is a very well organised polling unit. The people here have been on queue. I have no report of any failure or lapses. But the reports from some areas indicate that card readers have been malfunctioning.
The complaints by the senate president comes as unconfirmed reports have it that Mark is losing the senate seat in Adoka, Ugboju constituency of Benue State.
If the News is true, it will be the first time in 16 years Mr. Mark will be roundly defeated.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed the reasons why the card readers failed in yesterday’s election. According to INEC, one of the reasons the card readers deployed for Saturday’s presidential and parliamentary elections failed was because its officials failed to remove the protective film on the lens of the equipment.
