NCS advocates technology use

The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) has called on the Federal Government to deploy Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for solving national problems and drive development. NCS also suggested how the current administration can achieve this through the appointment of Information Technology experts into key paratstatals that are ICT-related to drive policy initiatives that would see ICT being used for solving problems while engendering national development. Addressing a press conference to announce the forthcoming 12th annual international conference scheduled to hold later this month in Akure, Ondo State, NCS President, Prof. David Adewumi, said that Nigerian governments, both at the federal and state levels, should comply with the Computer Professionals (Registration Council) of Nigeria (CPN) in making key IT-related appointments. According to him, all boards of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), especially those that are IT-based, should ensure that they make use of indigenous companies in implementing their IT projects rather than seeking companies to handle such projects outside Nigeria. Adewumi said: “The usage of IT in governance and security needs to be improved through more widespread adoption of IT professionalism in the private and public sectors. NCS and its members can play a major role in improving the state of security nationwide, combating terrorism, enhancing public service delivery and accountability and boosting job creation.” Commenting on the level of IT adoption in the country, Adewumi lamented that previous administrations had paid little attention to the CPN Act, which states that companies and individuals dully registered are those that should be used in IT project designs and executions.
