Clampdown on cyclists begins next week

Indications emerged yesterday that Lagos State Government would begin clampdown on commercial motorcyclists otherwise called Okada riders next week.
Since the beginning of the enforcement of the Lagos Road Traffic Law 2012, at least, 45,100 motorcycles have been impounded by the officials of the state Task Force on Environment and Special Offense Unit.
The law was enacted by the then Governor Babatunde Fashola-led administration on August 2, 2012.
Worried by the sudden increase in crime and accident rate as a result of the return of motorcyclists to the hitherto prohibited routes, the government had on June 25, after a meeting with the leaders of the motorcycle unions, given Okada riders a 21-day ultimatum to vacate all restricted routes in the metropolis.
