70-year-old man dies in SARS custody in Ondo

A 70-year-old man, Gbenga Omolo walked into the police cell on Friday after he was arrested by the State Anti Robbery Squad for an alleged offence last week but by the time his family members came for his bail on Tuesday, he was found dead and his remains deposited in the mortuary of the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Akure.

The family of Omolo and his colleagues, who are members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), alleged that the man was killed by the men of SARS over a frivolous offence. They also demanded for justice saying his killers must not be allowed to go scot-free.

His son, Kola said his father died in the custody of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Oda Road after he was tortured by some policemen attached to the station.

Similarly, members of the NURTW Wednesday came out enmasse to protest the death of Omolo, who was a member of the union before his death. It was learnt that the state chapter of NURTW and family of the victim were planning to take the matter to court if the police delay in taking action to redress the injustice.
