The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has dragged one Mrs. Omolayo Adeniji before a Federal High Court in Lagos for allegedly laundering the proceeds of a drug trafficking deal perpetrated by her husband, Abayomi Adeniji.
Omolayo’s husband, Abayomi, has been convicted abroad and is currently serving a jail term over drug trafficking.
Omolayo is facing eight counts of money laundering before Justice John Tsoho.
The NDLEA, in a charge marked FHC/L/244C/12, alleged that Omolayo at various times moved various sums of money from the Zenith Bank account of one Potential Four Petroleum Limited, on behalf of her husband into her own private bank account.
The accused was said to have allegedly transferred over N50m from her husband’s account and retained same in her own account between April 2, 2008 and July 27, 2011, knowing full well that the money was proceeds of crime of illegal trafficking in narcotics.
Also, between August 6, 2008 and November 30, 2011, Omolayo also allegedly moved and spent another over N37.3m of the illegal business proceeds.
The NDLEA alleged that Omolayo made a cash payment of N20m to one Global Mix Capital Limited on April 14, 2011.
According to the NDLEA prosecutor, Mrs. Ahaji Obiageri, having dealt in N20m, a cash transaction above the threshold permitted by the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, Omolayo had put herself at variance with the law.
Omolayo was further accused to have transferred N5m from her husband’s account into the Zenith Bank account of one Olivia Adeniji on April 11, 2011 for onward transfer into her own bank account.
The NDLEA further alleged that the accused “converted N16m being the amount realised from sale of four plots of land situate at Ibeju Lekki Expressway, Lagos, which properties derived from illegal sale of narcotics,” contrary to Section 15(1)(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 and punishable under Section 15(1)(b) of the same Act.
Justice Tsoho has adjourned till June 16, 2015 for continuation of trial.
