Ebola nurse works at hospital that saved him

Ebola nurse works at hospital that saved him

The first British healthcare worker who caught and survived Ebola is working as an NHS nurse in the hospital that helped save his life.
He spoke to the BBC while working nights in A&E at the Royal Free Hospital in north London.
In an exclusive interview, Will Pooley said everyone should “honour and remember” the African healthcare staff who fought the disease.
He was flown back to the UK from Sierra Leone in an RAF airlift a year ago.
Pooley, 30, spent a week in a special isolation unit at the Royal Free, where he was treated with the experimental drug ZMapp.
He recovered quickly and returned to Sierra Leone in October to help efforts to contain the virus, which has claimed more than 11,000 lives in West Africa in the past year.
The latest figures from the World Health Organisation show there have been just three new Ebola cases in the past week – all from Guinea.
Pooley has been at the Royal Free for about three months. I accompanied him as he went back to the unit where he began his admission by crawling to his bed through a plastic tunnel.
Two separate rooms each contain a bed surrounded by plastic tents. The unit is, in effect, a self-contained hospital.
Pooley told BBC News: “It feels like a lifetime has passed since I was here, and I’m grateful to be alive.
“But my whole year has been coloured by the death, shortly after my discharge, of a nursing sister and colleague in Africa, Nancy Yoko.
“I know what treatment I received because of where I’m from. She died a really unpleasant death.
“She and a clutch of other staff there died protecting all of us from Ebola.
“Their story has been lost in some ways. We should remember them and honour them.”
He paid tribute to his “compassionate and skilled” colleagues in A&E, saying he was “emotionally connected” to the Royal Free after his Ebola treatment.
He added: “I bump into nurses in the lift who, a year ago, were saving my life.”
The nurse believes he caught Ebola from changing a baby’s nappy.
He was critical of the slow start to the global effort in tackling last year’s outbreak.
He said: “I’ve heard Barack Obama and David Cameron talk about how slow and inadequate the response was to start with.
“Ultimately we ended up paying the price for that.
“We had to commit more resources for something that could have been nipped in the bud earlier on.
“And even if we’re solving problems for selfish interests – to save trouble further down the line – we also have a moral responsibility to help.”
Some Ebola survivors have experienced problems such as joint pain and sight difficulties.
Pooley was not exposed to levels of the virus which gave him lingering effects, but said it was a problem for a “substantial minority” of people.

New Mom likes to give her baby daughter middle finger

Rebecca Schuman is an education columnist for Slate Magazine and also a new mum who apparently likes to give her sleeping infant baby daughter the middle finger, and post the photos to her Facebook page.

Schuman explained her reasoning for posting the questionable photos in a recent piece called “Baby Bird”:

“The reasons I take and post these pictures are varied. I crave emotional release after hours of increasingly desperate nursing, jiggling, rocking, walking, and, my personal favorite, walk-nursing (all wriggling, self-torpedoing 22 pounds of her).
I’m also trying to amuse my husband, to diffuse what could otherwise be even more strain on two adults pushed to the boundaries of civility. And, of course, there’s the defiant gesture of Parenting Realness…”She added:

“…my daughter is a grade-A pain in my a** about going to sleep.”

The Slate scribe is also very effusive over her affection for her daughter, and writes, ” I love my daughter, who is with me 20 hours a day and who co-sleeps with me and who is my whole life…”

Schuman is so enthusiastic about her approach to parenting, she’s even started a blog called Pan Kisses Kafka. In it, you can read some of her variations on lullabies. This particular verse is apparently sung to “Amazing Grace.”:

O Lini Bean
You are so tired
Why won’t you go to sleep?
Fuckin’ A, fuckin’ A
You’ve been up all day
Why won’t you go to sleep?
Though Schuman isn’t certain that her decision to wield her middle finger in front of her sleeping infant is philosophically sound, she claims that it makes her happy, and will stop doing it if (or when) her daughter realizes what’s happening, and maybe doesn’t find it all that funny.

People have been bashing her parenting skills and mental health online but she apparently doesn't care because she keeps trying to justify why she does what she does.

Doctor tells mother of twins - No matter what, one of your daughters will not survive

Amber McCullough is looking to Wednesday with mixed emotions. The Minnesota mother will deliver twin girls at the Colorado Fetal Care Center at Children's Hospital Colorado via cesarean section. No matter what, one of her daughters will not survive.
"I'm anxious and excited for Hannah and dreading what it means for Olivia," McCullough, 31, said.

Hannah and Olivia are conjoined twins who will be delivered by C-section at 32 weeks gestation, under the care of renowned fetal surgeon Dr. Timothy M. Crombleholme.

"I will get to see my girls very briefly after the delivery," McCullough said. "They will need to be intubated right away, but the doctors will hold them up real quick and I'll get a peek."

McCullough doesn't expect to have the chance to hold her daughters before doctors start the eight- to 12-hour surgery it will require to separate them.

McCullough says her daughters are joined at the chest, stomach and hips. Hannah and Olivia share an abdomen, liver and intestinal tract. The girls have separate hearts and kidneys.

"If I had my way, I'd keep them together if they both could live," McCullough said. "But it's not possible. I wish it were. If they stay together, they'll both pass."During her pregnancy, McCullough was overwhelmed with the opinions of doctors, friends and family.
She knew she wanted to carry her daughters and give them a shot at life even though the odds were stacked against them.

"I just can't lose both," McCullough said. "There's a chance of saving one."The latest statistics reveal conjoined twins occur once in every 200,000 births. Forty to 60% of conjoined twins are stillborn, while 35% survive only one day.

Hannah and Olivia have fared well during the pregnancy. Doctors have told McCullough that once the umbilical cord is cut after delivery, the girls will be tested.

Olivia is not expected to survive because of her heart. She only has a single ventricle and is missing valves.

Hannah's future is uncertain. She will face challenges which, for now, remain a mystery.

"We'll just have some things to work out as we go forward," McCullough said. "I'm going to make dang sure she's happy and comfortable."Last winter, McCullough, of Hastings, Minn., learned she was expecting one baby. Shortly into her second trimester she visited a doctor, only to walk out with a stunning revelation.

"I went in thinking I needed some simple antibiotics at an urgent care in Burnsville, and I walked out of there with a diagnosis of conjoined twins. I was in shock," said McCullough.McCullough said her pregnancy became more complicated as she visited several hospitals for consultations and received conflicting opinions of whether to move forward with the pregnancy.

"I walked out of there thinking I must terminate out of my best interest, otherwise I'd likely be risking my life, and I have a 6-year-old to think of," said McCullough. "So far in this journey we have gone from OK, we can save both, we can save none, we can save one, and it's been a roller coaster."
“There are few things sacred in life, your children will always make the top of that list, and of those few things sacred in life, they are always worth fighting for, even if you lose the battle. I think it’s very important their story be told. With my girls lies a message of life, strength, beauty.”

McCullough chose the University of Minnesota Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center to proceed with the high-risk pregnancy under the care of Dr. Tracy Prosen, who is also the Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center director.
"It's a balancing act. What are the risks to mom in this pregnancy and what are the risks to baby or babies? This is a situation where Amber has known all along this is a risk to her own health, and we've been monitoring closely for that," said Prosen.

Prosen diagnosed the twims with what is known as a Thoraco-omphalo-ischiopagus-tripus conjoinment, a term meaning the girls are joined from mid-chest to pelvis, sharing an abdomen, liver and intestinal tract, with three legs. The girls have two separate hearts and kidneys.

Hannah is the healthier twin, while Olivia has a weaker heart and only one leg, along with a congenital brain malformation called a Dandy Walker variant. With such health complications, doctors advised McCullough that Olivia is not expected to survive birth, while Hannah has a chance at survival.

"The cards are stacked against us. The reality right now is there is nothing they can do for Olivia. That is very hard to accept. People have asked me if I am ready for that. Course I'm not. Nobody is. I don't think you can prepare for losing a child," said McCullough, through tears. "You never picture yourself having conversations about contacting funeral homes, cremation, or memory baptisms. You don't think of having to make those arrangements for your kid when you should be painting their room pink or something."
"It's really the ultimate moral dilemma. It's been very difficult. But at the end of the day, if it's absolutely necessary and I'd lose both of them if we don't do this, then we need to do this," said McCullough.McCullough points to the commitment she learned in her Army career.

"I will never quit. I will never accept defeat. I will never leave a fallen solider. Why don't my kids deserve that same kind of commitment?" she said. "I think it's very important their story be told. With my girls lies a message of life, strength, beauty."McCullough has lived at the Ronald McDonald House in Aurora since early August. Her stepmother is there, keeping her company and caring for her.

McCullough also has spent the month talking with a bereavement doula, who has helped her sort through her feelings.

"This is not something you can be ready for," McCullough said. "Nobody is ready to lose a child no matter what the circumstances."

Chinese doctors set to remove 'Unicorn horn' from a woman's head (photos)

Doctors in China are set to remove a 'unicorn horn' from the head of an 87 year old woman named Liang Xiuzhen in Guiyan village in Ziyang City, in south-west China’s Sichuan Province. The elderly woman, known locally as the 'unicorn woman' because of the 13cm-long horn on top of her head which began to grow about 2 years ago. Doctors are astounded by the abnormal growth.

According to Wang Chaojun, Xiuzhen’s son, the growth started about 8 years ago

"My mother complained about this mole-like growth on her head that itched all the time. We found ways to cure her itch using traditional Chinese medicine, and then left it be."But two years ago, the mole turned to a growth...which rapidly grew into this horn in about 6 months.

"Now the horn hurts my mother and prevents her from sleeping. It also bleeds from time to time." the son said.

Doctors in China say it's "cornu cutaneum" (cutaneous horn), a keratinous skin tumour that has the appearance of a horn. Often small and benign, the growth can in some cases be much larger and malignant. The doctors say they can remove the growth through surgery but her family have reservations because of the woman's age

"My mother is old, and the horn is on her head which is a very sensitive area. I’m not confident in the idea of surgery. If something goes wrong during surgery, it would be terrible." the son said. He also said they are considering other option.

MDCN commences doctors in FG employ

Following the discovery of a fake doctor, Martins Ugwu, who worked in the Federal Ministry of Health for 9 years, using the certificates of his friend, Dr. Davidson Daniel George, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has commenced verification of all doctors employed by the Federal Government.

Registrar of the MDCN, Dr. Abdulmunin Ibrahim, said in an exclusive interview in Abuja, that the detection of Ugwu, who rose to become the chairman of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) chapter of the Health Ministry, was a pointer to the possibility of many other impersonators working for government.

Ugwu had been arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja, on a five-count charge for impersonation and stealing of a Bachelor of Medicine Degree of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

In the criminal charge, where he pleaded not guilty, Ugwu was also alleged to have stolen a Bachelor of Surgery Degree and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates belonging to one Dr. Daniel George.

Beside his arraignment, the Permanent Secretary of the Health Ministry, Linus Awute, at a briefing, stated that the ministry was computing all salaries and allowances paid to the impersonator.

Investigations showed that the ministry had computed the salaries and allowances paid to Ugwu from September 21, 2006 to May 31, 2015, to be approximately N17 million.

Ibrahim said the council, which regulates the practice of medicine in the country had written to the Head of Service, the Federal Civil Service Commission and the Federal Ministry of Health to furnish it with the list of all doctors working for the Federal Government, for proper verification.

24 year old Mother dies from cervical cancer after being turned down for smear test

A 24-year-old mother has died from cervical cancer after being denied a smear test because she was too young.

Rachel Sarjantson, 24, who was due to marry in March, battled the disease for a year before her death which her family has described as 'completely avoidable'.

The legal age for a smear test in the UK is 25 and her grieving family have now called for the age limit to be lowered to prevent further deaths.

Her mother, Lisa Rich, said: 'She didn't need to suffer this. It was tragic and completely unavoidable. It shouldn't be happening in this country'.

When Miss Sarjantson was finally given a smear test, it was too late as she had already been diagnosed with aggressive cancer that had taken over her body.

After a hysterotomy last summer and four weeks of radiotherapy, doctors thought she was in the clear.
But in April, she was told the cancer had returned and by that point her body was too weak to undergo chemotherapy treatment.

She was transferred to hospital on June 30 and remained there until her death on August 12.
The mother-of-one, an early years practitioner, was so devoted to her 20-month-old son Ronnie she even timed her radiotherapy treatment on the morning of his first birthday so he could still have a party in the evening.

Her mother, Lisa, said: 'She was a loving person and very close with her little boy. Throughout the whole thing, she remained positive.
'She never gave in and made a bucket list because as far as she was concerned she was going to beat it.'
She added: 'She was trying to plan camping trips. She really wanted to get better and to carry on - as far as she was concerned that's what she was going to do.
'Even when the doctors said you don't have to have any more operations if you don't want, she said "no, that would be giving in'".
Mr Hyde, a corporal in the army, has now transferred to the second battalion, Duke of Lancaster's regiment, based at Weeton, so he can be at home to look after their son.
Her family are now campaigning to lower the age limit for cervical screening and said a simple procedure could have prevented the tumour developing.

Her sister, Zoe, 28, who worked with Rachel, said: 'If the age limit had been lowered already, she might still be here.

'So many young girls are dying of it. Maybe in time they can help other mums, for their children's sake if not anything else.'

Cervical cancer often has no symptoms in its early stages but the most common is irregular bleeding, in between periods, after sex or after the menopause.

UCH resident doctors call off strike

UCH resident doctors call off strike
Three and a half months after they went on an indefinite strike over non-implementation of a grade level ‎skipping as directed by the Head of Service of the Federation, the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan branch, Monday called on all its members to resume duty immediately, while negotiation continues with the hospital management.
According to the President of the ARD, Dr. Luqman Ogunjimi and the Secretary General, Dr. Anthony Ude during a press conference addressed at‎ the UCH Monday, the association decided to call off the strike following intervention from well- meaning Nigerians including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Elders in the field of Medicine and Dentistry and the Medical, Dental Council Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), among others.
‎The statement reads: “Our members are hereby directed by the Emergency General meeting of the ARD, UCH, to resume back to their duty posts 8a.m. Monday, 17th August, 2015, while negotiation continues”.
While calling off the strike, according to the President “in the interest of our patients”, the association nevertheless noted that the UCH management had the opportunity of paying the skipping allowance from the increased N940 million from the personnel subvention of the hospital.
According to Ogunjimi: “Our stand as a congress is that this N940 million can be used to pay skipping since payment of salary from personnel subvention can never be misappropriation, more importantly now that the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, has expressly reiterated the directive for skipping”.
It urged the UCH management ‎under the Chief Medical Directorship of Professor Temitope Alonge to give attention to other perennial local issues including: “deplorable and dilapidated call rooms, delay and non-promotion of our members even after meeting all requisite conditions, unremitted pension fund deduction/refusal of enrolment of our members on the Contributory Pension Scheme – all contributing to the failed negotiation of over 17 months prior to the commencement of the strike, while the hospital management remained defiant to our agitation over these injustices”.

New York man pretended to be doctor, prescribed medication

A 43-year-old former flight attendant was arrested Friday on charges he pretended to be a medical doctor and psychologist, allegedly treating more than 100 patients from his basement apartment for the past 3 years.

Donald Lee-Edwards, of New York, never graduated medical school or earned a doctoral degree to be licensed for either profession, Acting Richmond County District Attorney Daniel Master said. But he prescribed patients medications and took blood and urine samples, investigators said.

"He merely bestowed upon himself the professional titles of clinical psychologist and medical doctor," Master said. "He is neither trained nor licensed to provide any mental health or medical services."

Prosecutors said Lee-Edwards had been seeing patients since 2013, billing himself as having worked "extensively with family members and victims of 9/11," although it was unclear if he actually did.
Lee-Edwards' attorney Matthew Blum said there is no evidence he ever harmed anyone.

"They're alleging he was some sort of doctor who was operating on people," Blum said. "They're turning this guy into a monster. He was really just trying to help some people in his community."
Investigators said Lee-Edwards came to the attention of law enforcement after a patient became suspicious of his unorthodox bedside manner, talking about other patients, bragging he graduated high school at age 13 and saying he attended law school.

Man who went to hospital with sore leg baffles doctors who discovered he only had half a brain

One patient at a hospital in France got the most unlikely of shocks when he went for a check-up on a leg injury - to be told he was missing half of his brain. The 44-year-old father-of-two, who has not been identified, amazed doctors who could not believe he had survived.
The bizarre diagnosis has only just been brought to light in the respected medical journal, The Lancet, but actually happened in 2007.
Lionel Feuillet, who studied the man’s brain, told the New Scientist: "The whole brain was reduced frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital lobes — on both left and right sides.
"These regions control motion, sensibility, language, vision, audition, and emotional, and cognitive functions."

X-rays showed up to 75% of the man's brain was missing
Doctors discovered that the man had suffered post-natal hydrocephalus- or water on the brain - as a child
Shunts applied to his head were removed when he was 14 and it is thought for the next 30 years fluid continued to build in his brain and slowly break down brain matter until he lost between 50% to 75%.

Now, after an eight year study, scientists believe the man survived because his brain reorganised itself over time.

Most of the brain fluid has now been drained and the man lives a normal life with a job in the civil service.
Scientists writing in the Lancet have therefore reached the conclusion that a person’s intelligence and brain size are not as related as once thought.
They believe that as bits of the brain died, other parts took on the jobs the dead bits used to do.
