UK pledges assistance to defeat Boko Haram – DHQ

The United Kingdom (UK), has reaffirmed its readiness to assist the Nigerian military’s counter-insurgency operations against Boko Haram in the North East.
The UK’s resolve was contained in a statement signed by the Acting Director of Defence Information (DDI), Col. Rabe Abubakar.
The statement said the British Deputy Chief of Defence Staff on Military Strategy and Operations, Lt. Gen. Gordon Messenger, made the position known when he led other senior British military officers on a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence State (CDS), Maj. Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin, at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ).
It noted that: “Britain has re-affirmed its resolve to help Nigeria in the fight against terrorism.
“Lt Gen Messenger stated that the essence of the visit of the senior British officials to Nigeria was to broaden the deep relationship and re-energise the bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and Britain.
“He pointed out that they came to Nigeria for deliberations towards identifying the ideal area of collaboration to be adopted in the fight against insurgency and the best way to make it work. He stressed that the fight against terrorism is a multifaceted problem that demands strategy and careful exploration of grey areas in order to re-appraise the best support the British could offer.”
While acknowledging the assistance the Nigerian Armed Forced had got in the past from Britain,  the CDS was quoted as noting that: “The Nigerian Armed Forces is doing everything within its power to liquidate Boko Haram and its cells.”
He expresses optimism that the inauguration of reinvigorated  Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and the appointment of a Nigerian Commander, will hasten the defeat of Boko Haram.
