I inherited 12.5bn debt profile from Elechi, says Umahi


The Ebonyi State Governor, Chief David Umahi, has revealed that he inherited a total debt profile of N12.5billion from the immediate past government of Chief Martin Elechi.
Umahi, who disclosed this Thursday,while briefing newsmen in Abakaliki, shortly after Commissioning residential Urban city lighting along the ever busy Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway.
The Governor, stated that there was no iota of truth in some quarters that the building renovation work at the governor’s lodge, has gulped N400million, but admitted that so far, he has spent only N60million, adding that the insinuation was the hadiwork of his opponents.
He also added his administration is committed to making life easy for the  residents of the state.
The Governor said he was exited by the project because he believes strongly that little things make life easy for the people assuring that his government was committed to doing those things.
He stated that it was the wish of the government to see that all the streets light projects had all been completed but some contractors handling them were not corporating with the government.
“There are some of the projects that we awarded and the cost is such that we can no longer pay. You know what the economy is now; probably, they were awarded when the economy was much better.
“Right now, you know the price of oil is going down day by day and we asked these contractors  who were highly mobilised to come and finish the job so that we arrange how to pay them monthly but many of them are not willing to do that.”
He stressed that his government was planning to terminate the contracts of the contractors who were not willing to corporate so that the government could get materials on credit to complete the projects.
