The Rector of the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos, Dr. Margaret Kudirat Ladipo, has spoken of plans of the polytechnic to increase access to the institution through provision of additional facilities and structures. She said concerted efforts to improve the college’s carrying capacity were being frantically made by the management to create more space for students. The rector, who spoke against the backdrop of the limited admission spaces in the college, hinted that out of over 110,000 candidates that applied to the college as their preferred polytechnic of choice, only 2,416 were admitted into the Higher National Diploma (HND), while 3,035 candidates could only be enrolled for the National Diploma (ND).
The rector disclosed this during the matriculation ceremony of the college for the 2014/2015 academic session, where she told the matriculating students that the polytechnic adheres strictly to the government’s 70 to 30 ratio in favour of science and technology courses. While urging the students to rededicate their energies to their primary assignment in the college which is academic activities, Ladipo warned: “In YABATECH, it is illegal to operate a secret society or belong to a banned society, as any contravention of the regulation will lead to expulsion and possible criminal prosecution. According to her, the management has taken far-reaching measures to curtail the menace of cultism, examination malpractice, indecent dressing as the management has zero tolerance for all these menace. Towards engaging the students positively, the rector said the college offered entrepreneurial studies, and has established a full-fledged Centre for Entrepreneurship Development with strong linkage with the world of commerce and industry, which equips the students to be self-reliant before their graduation.
