Kwara council workers commence strike

Kwara council workers commence strike

Local government workers in Kwara State under the auspices of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) yesterday commenced an indefinite strike to protest the non-payment of their salaries.
Secretary of the association, Abayomi Afolabi, who confirmed the development to newsmen said: “All local government workers in all the sixteen local government areas of the state have embarked on strike, which is starting today.
“The strike is related to the non-payment of salaries for several months, some are owed five months, and those owed the least is two months. We have joined our colleagues in other states who had embarked on the strike in a long time.”
But the NULGE scribe denied the claim that some members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) are planning to stage a protest during the Sallah celebration.
He said: “We are not planning to embark on any protest during the Sallah celebration; in fact, most of us are not celebrating because there is money to celebrate. Our salaries have not been paid for two to five months.”
But while reacting to the development, Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Alhaji Lateef Okandeji, said there was no cause for alarm as he explained that the ‘payment of our standing salaries have begun since yesterday.’ “I saw a copy of their communiqué detailing the strike.”
