Ebonyi, NLC meeting ends in deadlock
The joint meeting between the Ebonyi State government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday ended in a deadlock.
The closed-door meeting, which lasted for four hours, had in attendance the Deputy Governor, Kelechi Eric Igwe and officials of the NLC, was held at the Government House, Abakaliki.
Briefing newsmen after the meeting, the state Chairman, Mr. Ikechukwu Nwafor, said the meeting will continue until the workers’ demands are met, adding that the indefinite strike by the NLC will commence next week Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Governor Dave Umahi has tasked the NLC to wage war against corruption, just as he called on the workers to support the government to enable it achieve uncommon development in the state.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Emma Anya, Umahi spoke during a courtesy call on the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Iyuba Wabba, in Abuja.
The governor spoke about the challenges that may prevent his government from paying the new salary structure, just as he tasked the president to compel workers to accept the old salary structure until when the state finances improve.
He said: “I suggest that the NLC come up with a committee on how to check corruption in the public service. You need to do everything to bring down corruption as I believe one major problem we have in this country is corruption.
“In Ebonyi State, we are facing serious challenges, because of the nation’s economic downturn occasioned by dwindling oil prices, hence the decline in federal allocation to states.”
