Bertrand: I deserve more England caps

The Southampton full-back has three senior outings to his name but had to wait until Luke Shaw and Leighton Baines withdrew from last month's squad to be included by Roy HodgsonRyan Bertrand is determined to convince Roy Hodgson that he deserves to be higher up the England pecking order after impressing for Southampton this season.

The full-back is part of a Saints defence that has shipped just 22 goals in 32 Premier League matches this season - fewer than any other team - and made his loan move from Chelsea permanent in January.

However, the three-time England international was overlooked for last months' initial squad to face Lithuania and Italy, with Leighton Baines, Kieran Gibbs and Luke Shaw chosen at left-back.

Shaw withdrew, allowing Danny Rose to be called-up, with Bertrand having to wait until Baines pulled out for a chance and the 25-year-old, who came on as a late substitute against Italy, is eager to be included more.

"The international break was different - it went from one extreme to the next, but it was good to get back in the frame and get back in the door," he told reporters.

"And of course it was good to get on the pitch at the end, even though it was very brief.

"It's down to the manager - whoever he wants to pick, it's his decision. I'll just concentrate on my game because I'm confident enough to know that I should be in there. But I don't pick the team."
