Police Commission Clears Zakari Biu Of Alleged Complicity

After three years and seven months of his dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force, reprieve has now come the way of Mr. Zakari Biu, as the Police Service Commission (PSC) Friday, announced his statutory retirement.

Incidentally, it was the same body that fired Biu, in whose custody a Boko Haram commander and suspected mastermind of the 2011 Christmas Day bombing in Madalla, Niger State, Kabiru Sokoto, escaped. As one of the few senior officers trained in counter-terrorism operations abroad, it was no surprise that the then Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Hafiz Ringim, saddled Biu, who was the Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of Special Investigation at the Zone 7 Police Headquarters in Abuja, with the custody of Sokoto.
Upon the suspect’s escape, however, the Force recommended Biu’s dismissal to the PSC.
Tthe Commission, in a statement adopting the recommendation for Biu’s dismissal, had said, among others: “The Police Service Commission, after due consideration of the role played by the Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Hassan Zakari Biu, in the escape of the Boko Haram suspect, Kabiru Sokoto, today 22nd February, 2012 approved the dismissal of Mr. Hassan Zakari Biu from the Nigeria Police Force with effect from February 22, 2012.”
But, he would now heave a sigh of relief, as the Commission Friday, exonerated him of any complicity in the escape of the sect’s commander.
