The Athletic Federation of Nigeria has said athletes that will represent the country at the IAAF World Championship in Beijing, China, will depart Nigeria on Tuesday afternoon aboard Ethiopian Airlines. The AFN released a list of 17 athletes that will represent the country and assured Nigerians that the athletes that made the trip were all capable of winning medals. Speaking with New Telegraph on the telephone, the secretary of the federation, Olumide Bamiduro, said they could only find seats aboard Ethiopian Airlines as all the seats on Emirate Airline were already booked.
“We want the athletes to get there on time so that they can acclimatise,” he said. “We have said it countless times that we are not going to China for sight-seeing or jamboree but to make Nigeria proud. “All the athletes going are potential champions and I can assure you that we will not be coming back empty-handed.” The IAAF World Championships is scheduled to hold between August 22 and 30 with the Congress and IAAF/IOC meeting scheduled for August 19 and 20, where new officials of the IAAF will be elected.
