Former Nigerian President, General Ibrahim Babangida, has thrown his weight behind the candidature of former Governor of Abia State Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, for the presidency of worldfootball governing body, FIFA. The elder statesman made this disclosure on Sunday when he briefed correspondents as part of plans to mark his 74th birthday at his uphill mansion, Minna.
There have been concerted calls in some quarters for Dr. Kalu to vie for FIFA presidency. When asked his opinion about his political godson gunning for football’s number one seat, IBB said: “he has my support.” Babangida said: “Kalu has countless of achievements to show from his performance, as two-time governor of Abia State. He made Enyimba what they are today, because it was through his effort that Nigeria broke the CAF Champions’ League jinx. He won the competition twice as well as the Super Cup.
“I give my nod to his aspirations; I don’t think it is a bad idea. His interest in sports especially football and the successes recorded with Enyimba football club actually brought the club to the limelight. “If his contribution is recognised outside this country, there is nothing wrong in saying that he should run for FIFA Presidency. If I have a vote, I will cast my vote for him.”
