Abolurin tasks NSCDC on bribery, suspects’ rights

Abolurin tasks NSCDC on bribery, suspects’ rights
Former Commandant General (CG) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr Ade Abolurin, has charged officers to abstain from collecting bribe from suspects. Abolurin made the call yesterday while he was being ‘pulled out’ at the NSCDC Lagos State Command Headquarters, Alausa, Ikeja.
The event was to honour and appreciate the 10 years efforts and commitment of Abolurin to humanity. Speaking on the achievement of the former CG, the Assistant Commandant General, Zone ‘A’, Mr Osaro Osiewegie, said Abolurin worked selflessly while in office. He said: “There is no better way to appreciate the effort of such a man than to celebrate him on his retirement. He went through a lot of odds and came out victorious.”
At the event, the Chairman and Director of Transworld Security, Dr Ona Ekhomu, described Abolurin as a very distinguished public officer. He said: “He built the command from a very scratchy beginning to a lofty stage that can now rank with any of the best security agencies in the country.” Ekhomu added that Abolurin left a good legacy that was expected of any individual heading public position in any agency.
Responding, Abolurin said: “I would not have been able to stand out from the crowd if not for God. Our vision is to have a corps with integrity and credibility; to ensure the corps works on the bases of humility and transform the society. We have achieved that.” The former CG urged his successor, Abdullahi Muhammadu, to emulate the same spirit and vision by not working in isolation, but rather, to cooperate with other sister security agencies.
Abolurin pleaded with the corps to ensure that no suspect is kept beyond 24 hours in its custody, so that justice could be done. He said: “The day you start collecting bribe from suspects, the presence of God will depart from you.” The state NSCDC Commandant, Mr Gabriel Abaffi, described Abolurin as a man who stands by his word and never compromised.
