Salary crisis: Ebonyi NULGE denies signing ‘peace’ document

Salary crisis: Ebonyi NULGE denies signing ‘peace’ document
Ebonyi State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has said that it did not sign the document from the state government’s special committee on salary dispute resolution.
The committee in a statement disclosed that NULGE has agreed to shelve the demand for the payment of salaries and related increments until the rot in the state’s local government system is cleared.
But in a release made available in Abakaliki and signed by its Chairman, Leonard Nkah, NULGE directed council workers to disregard the committee’s pronouncement.
“We are not signatories to the document emanating from the first sitting of the committee, as we specifically objected to the ‘paragraph three’ of the committee’s document, as the paragraph in question has a discriminatory tone and was ‘open-ended’ in nature, as it relates to local government workers.
The release noted that the workers demand was that council workers be paid at least May 2015 salaries based on the new minimum wage salary structure while the committee proceeds with its work of negotiating the workers’ salary table.
“This was our stand even as the government carries on with its restructuring of the local government system while the workers meet up with domestic needs.”
it explained that this stand was turned down by the committee which made NULGE to reject the clause that suggests that a different salary table be negotiated for council workers.
“This practice is strange to states in the country, as in line with this resolve, the NULGE representatives refused to sign the document despite all entreaties, as this is because no one signs an agreement that he or she gets nothing from.
The release urged council workers to disregard the announcement that it signed the document.
It urged members to remain law abiding as the union will do all it can to ensure that the May and June 2015 salaries owed councils workers are paid, as it has already been worked for.
