Traditional rulers advocate death sentence for suicide bombers
Traditional rulers in the country under the name National Association of Royal Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NARTN) Wednesday called on the National Assembly to amend the constitution to make suicide bombing crime a death sentence.
The 180 traditional rulers after its 99 National Conference meeting held in Abuja, stated that the present constitution is not helpful to the fight against insurgence as it only confers life imprisonment to suicide bombers.
The traditional rulers, in its communique read by its National President, HRH Dr. Thomas A. Obiefule  also canvassed a proper military training of the National Youth Corps members for them to assist in fighting insurgency.
Reading the communique, he said: “The Association exhaustively deliberated on a wide range of issues on the state of affairs in the country. After critical and unbiased appraisal of the realities on ground in relation to so-economic and political developments, the Association resolved to advised the Federal Government and National Youth Service Corps to subject youth corps members to intensive military training to enable them complement efforts by the police, the army and other security agencies in fighting terrorism and all forms of insurgence. The nation’s constitution in not helping the country in fighting insurgence. For instance, if someone uses explosives to wreck havoc, killing so many people, he or she will only bag life imprisonment if convicted. This is most unfair and unfortunate. The National Assembly should amend the constitution to carry death penalty. Cases involving terrorism should not exceed three months for judgment to be delivered as is the case in other countries”.
The Association also commended the President, Muhammadu Buhari for bailing state governments out of their financial predicament by making money available for them to settle arrears of workers’ salaries and other debts.
Advising the President not to be in haste in forming cabinet, they commended the President for his peaceful take-over from his predecessor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
It said, It is noteworthy that since the creation of Nigeria, President Buhari is the only democratically elected Nigeria’s President that took over power without facing litigation.
“We advise the President not to be in haste to form his cabinet. He should take his time, to avoid costly mistakes. Nigerians should be patient and give him a chance to do what will be in the overall benefit of the country”.
The Association also maintained that the only way to deal with fuel scarcity was for government to remove subsidy, which will create healthy competition and encourage potential dealers wishing to enter the oil sector provided there was an amendment of the 1977 law by the military which established the fuel subsidy.
