A three-storey building located at 29 Oloto Street, Ebute-Meta area of Lagos collapsed about 5:45am yesterday. This came barely a week after a four-storey building on 38, Commercial Avenue, Yaba area of the Lagos metropolis caved in.
It was gathered that the Ebute-Meta building was part of the distressed structures marked for demolition by the Lagos State Building and Control Agency (LASBCA). The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr Michael Akindele, said no life was lost in the incident.
Akindele commended the former occupants of the building for heeding government’s advice to vacate the dilapidated house. He said: “Luckily, no life was lost in the incident as the building was said to have been abandoned by the occupants several months ago after being served quit notice by LASBCA.
“Although all the relevant emergency agencies led by LASEMA and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were on ground to manage the situation generated by the collapsed building. “The structure is an abandoned building already vacated by the occupants. No casualty was recorded at all.
The building had been marked for demolition by LASBCA before it eventually collapsed this morning (yesterday). All the occupants have since vacated.
The building is closed to the street where we recorded collapsed building incident two years ago.”
