
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will hold bye-election into the Katsina Federal Constituency on August 8 to fill the vacancy created by the death of Sheik Umar Ababakar.
Ababakar, a House of Representatives member-elect on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) died on June 3, few days before the inauguration of the 8th National Assembly.
A statement Thursday by the Director for Election and Party Monitoring department, Bala Shittu said the decision to fill the vacancy was reached after a meeting with stakeholders held on Wednesday.
According on the INEC statement, the breakdown of the other activities in the build up to the elections are notice of election – July 17, Political Party Primaries- July 25 to August 7, collation of CF001 and CF0002, while the last day for submission of Forms CF001 & CF002 at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
It also fixed the date for the publication of list of nominated candidates for the election for between July 29 to 30, while parties are expected to submit names of party agents to REC between July 30 to August 5.
Last day/time for campaign was fixed for August 7.
The statement was, however, silent on the vacant senatorial seat in Borno State created by the death of Senator Zenna.
Meanwhile, INEC said it has approved the registration of a new party, the ‘Democratic Peoples Congress’ (DPC), thereby bringing the total number of registered parties in the country to 29.
The approval came at the end of Commission’s meeting, held on Friday, June 19, 2015.
In a letter addressed to the National Chairman of the party, signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Mrs. Augusta C. Ogakwu, the party Constitution, Manifesto, Logo/flag and the list of the National Executive Officers were also approved.
The letter also stated that the certificate of registration would be issued in due course.
