Boko Haram: Special Forces clear Damaturu/Biu road of mines – Army
The Nigerian Army Sunday, announced that its Special Forces have, with the support of the Nigeria Police and local vigilante, cleared the strategic Damaturu/Biu road of mines planted by suspected Boko Haram fighters.
It will be recalled that the suspected insurgents had taken over a part of the ever-busy road at a time Muslim faithful were travelling to celebrate Sallah.
But, the Army, in a statement signed by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations (DAPR), Colonel Sani, said the road has since been cleared by Special Forces, who were assisted by the police and the local vigilante.
It, therefore, advised commuters wishing to ply the road, to do so as, apart from removing the deadly mines, adequate security has also been put in place, to guarantee safety.
During the operation, the Army said four Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), were discovered and destroyed.
The statement entitled “Damaturu-Biu road has been cleared of mines”, reads: “Good morning,  please inform members of the public that Damaturu-Biu road has been cleared of mines by a team of Nigerian Army Special Forces, Explosives Ordinance Devices with support from Nigeria Police and local vigilante.
“During the painstaking and thorough operation, four Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs) planted by suspected Boko Haram terrorists were discovered and successfully detonated.
“Commuters are encouraged to use the road as adequate security is being provided. The Nigerian Army  wishes to further enjoin the public to be more security conscious and report any suspicious persons and movements to the security agents. Thank you.”
There has been a resurgence of Boko Haram activities in the past weeks, occasioned by deadly bomb and gun attacks.
This is in spite of the assertion by the Army, that the Military Command and Control Centre (MCCC), which was moved to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on the orders of President Muhammadu Buhari, was now operational.
Reports say at least 400 people have died in the last few weeks from Boko Haram attacks.
