Jibrin steps down for Dogara

Realignment of members of the House of Representatives towards the election for the position of speaker continued yesterday as Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin (APC, Kano) withdrew from the race and declared support for Hon. Yakubu Dogara (APC, Bauchi). Jibrin, who was the first lawmaker to formally declare intention to contest for speaker on April 8th told journalists at a press conference in Abuja that Dogara from the north east is the best candidate for speaker of the 8th Assembly. He said his decision to drop his ambition and team up with Dogara was taken after due consultation with his supporters.
He said, “In the last few weeks, I had consulted widely with my supporters and colleagues, In order to diffuse the prevailing tension, unite the House and ensure a smooth take-off of the Buhari administration, I hereby withdraw from the race for the Speakership of the 8th House of Representatives and consequently throw my weight behind the candidature of Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, one of our senior colleague, a man of integrity, an astute legislator and an amiable gentle man”
According to him, “Dogara, comes with no baggage. He is trusted by all with the largest acceptability and capacity to unite the House. He is honest, straight forward and does not lie.”
The House committee chairman on finance added that Dogara “epitomises personal discipline, a man who has the full conviction of his faith and a man who has strong family values” He said as team player, Dogara who chairs the House services committee played a critical role in stabilising the House after the defection of the 37 legislators who defected from the PDP to the APC.
