PROTEST ERUPTS IN ABEOKUTA AS BULLION VAN KILLS OKADA RIDER

A bullion van attached to one of the new generation banks in Abeokuta, killed a commercial motorcyclist, identified as Gbenga Okesola, yesterday, Thursday.

The incident happened in front of the popular Ogun Property Investment Company (OPIC) building at Oke-Ilewo area of Abeokuta around 1pm.

This led to a protest by commercial motorcyclists, who took control of the area, vandalizing properties and inflicting injuries on passers-by.

This resulted in pandemonium as people scampered to safety with eateries and other business centres hurriedly closed while the confusion lasted.

It took the intervention of the police to restore law and order to the area after about an hour.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the police public relations officer in the state, confirmed the incident to journalists at a news briefing.

Adejobi expressed regret over the development but accused the motorcyclists of taking laws into their hands.

He said the police had to apply minimum force as prescribed by law to enable them disperse the “violent protesters” in order to restore normalcy to the area.

Adejobi said the remains of the dead motorcyclist had been evacuated to an undisclosed morgue in the town, adding that the driver of the van and some other protesters, have been arrested.

He sympathised with the family of the deceased and disclosed that the police had commenced investigation into the case.
