POLICE OFFICER KILLED “KEKE” DRIVER IN LAGOS
An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), identified simply as Mohammed, shot and killed a 31-year-old tricycle rider (popularly called ‘Keke’), known as Aranse Akeem, a father of one.
According to witnesses, Akeem and the ASP had gotten into a minor altercation and the furious police officer reportedly whipped out his service pistol and shot the man at close range, killing him on the spot.
After he killed the man, Mohammed was said to have commandeered a commercial motorcyclist at gun point to whisk him out of the area.
According to another tricyclist who witnessed the murder, trouble started after a tricycle fully loaded with passengers, tried to reverse unaware that a motorcyclist was coming behind. The tricycle hit the motorcycle carrying the policeman who was in mufti dress.
The policeman allegedly jumped down from the motorcycle and threatened to deal with the rider. Akeem who was calling for his own passengers went with another rider to plead on behalf of the rider so that the man would let him go.
“When the tricycle hit the ‘okada’ and the man got down and threatened to deal with the rider, Akeem and I got up from where we were and went over to start begging and apologising to him. We begged him because we wanted him to allow the tricycle rider to go.
As he stood in front of the tricycle, holding unto it, he had already caused traffic jam.
But despite that, he refused to leave the road and the traffic continued to build up.
Akeem held him and dragged off the tricycle, so that motorists could pass. That was how he brought out a pistol from his waistband and shot Akeem. He shot again into the air and people fled. He stopped a motorcyclist and ordered him to take him away. I quickly followed them with my tricycle. I knew he was running away.
When I was about to lose them, I stopped a motorcyclist and followed them.”
The policeman was trailed to Unity Estate Close, Abule-Odo area of Lagos area. The motorcyclist that carried him was later apprehended and it was through him that the tricyclist got to know that the man was an ASP serving at Afonka Police Station at Akowonjo, Egbeda area of the state.
On Wednesday, May 6, colleagues of the late Akeem had stormed the police station demanding justice over the shooting and subsequent killing of their colleague.
