Police council confirms Arase substantive IG
The Police Council presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of Mr. Solomon Arase, as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.
Jonathan had earlier appointed Arase in acting capacity when he relieved his predecessor, Abba, of his appointment.
The Police Council consists of the President, Vice Presidents, all state governors and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, among others.
Members unanimously confirmed Arase’s appointment after listening to the President. They were also briefed by the new police boss on measures being put in place to reduce the level of crimes in the country.
Arase later told State House correspondents that in discussing the security challenges and his strategic responses to addressing them, he would do his best.
While admitting that there is no society that is crime-free, Arase said the police under him would ensure that it will be within tolerable level.
He explained that he had already put an enforcement policy in place to ensure that his directive on dismantling of roadblocks is complied with.
He said 16 teams had moved out across the length and breadth of the country to ensure there is strict compliance to that order.
When asked what should be expected from him after his confirmation, Arase said, “To my men, I will tell them that their welfare will number one on my cardinal responsibilities.
“You don’t motivate a workforce except their welfare is paramount. I am going to ensure that their welfare is going to be put on the front burner.
“To Nigerians, I know that their expectations are high but I can assure them that no Nigerian will suffer any injustice by my inaction or action.”
