NBS to determine petroleum products’ consumption pattern

The National Bureau of Statistics on Monday unveiled plans to carry out a survey of the consumption of gas and petroleum products in the country.

The survey, which will be carried out from May 27, is designed to build a robust oil and gas database for policy formulation and strategic planning for sustainable development in the sector.

Speaking at the opening session of a stakeholders’ meeting on the survey, the Statistician-General of the Federation, Dr. Yemi Kale, said the idea to carry out the survey had been approved by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

He said the survey, which is the first of its kind in the oil and gas sector, was a vital move in strengthening the production, supply and consumption chain of gas and petroleum products in the country.

Kale said, “The survey idea was initially proposed by the Consultative Committee on Petroleum Statistics in one of its quarterly meetings to carry out a survey on gas demand, supply and utilisation in Nigeria. The survey is designed to build a robust oil and gas database for policy formulation and strategic planning and sustainable development in the sector.

“It will also assist in determining the domestic volume of gas and petroleum products demand, supply and utilisation as well as exportation and importation of quantities within the study period.

“In addition, the survey will promote the usage of gas domestically as well as for export, and will also serve as an end-point to generate relevant statistical data necessary to formulate planning options for the sustainable development of the oil and gas sector in Nigeria.”

In view of the importance of the survey, Kale urged stakeholders to handle the task given to them with seriousness.

The Chairman, Consultative Committee on Petroleum Statistics, Mr. Simon Harry, said the pilot phase of the survey was carried out in Lagos last year, noting that all inadequacies registered with the instruments had been addressed.

The survey, according to him, will cover from 2012 to 2014.
