The Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ilesa, Osun State, Mr. Olayinka Sokoya, has asked President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to wage war against corruption in order to make the country a conducive place to do business.
Sokoya said this in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Sunday.
He blamed the poor economy for mass departure of Nigerians to foreign lands, including South Africa, where Nigerians and other Africans suffered xenophobic attacks recently.
According to him, Nigerians are trooping out to other countries on daily basis because they want to make a living despite the harsh economic condition at home.
He said, “The President-elect should be unsparing in his war against corruption. He should wage a serious war against corruption and ensure that his administration goes after every corrupt official.
“If our leaders can make the situation in the country better, I believe foreign nationals, even from Europe, will begin to troop into our country.
One of the biggest problems in Nigeria is corruption and this is affecting a lot of things.
“There is also high cost of doing business here in Nigeria. The economy is bad and that is another area the President-elect should face. He should make Nigeria conducive to do business.
“If this is done, Nigerian youths will stop rushing out of the country. If the conditions are okay, Nigerians will no longer troop out of the country. Many of them do not like where they are residing but they were forced out of the country by our poor economy.”
He urged the President-elect to tackle the problem of unemployment, which, he said, had worsened the poverty level among Nigerians.
He said that artisans and others would heave a sigh of relief if the incoming administration could solve the problem of epileptic supply of electricity, stressing that Buhari needed to work hard to solve the myriad of problems facing the nation in order to restore the confidence of Nigerians in the country.
