Hauls Of Stones Disrupts Swearing-in Of Govs Bello, El-Rufai


What was expected to be a peaceful and happy change from the sixteen years of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressive Congress (APC) administration in Niger state yesterday turned rowdy as hauls of stones from political thugs disrupted the handing-over ceremony which took place at the Bako Kontagora memorial stadium in Minna.

Invited guests, well wishers and hundreds of other supporters within and outside the stadium complex scampered for safety in the stampede that followed as political thugs pelt stones and rains of abusive words on the former Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu.

Trouble started midway into the ceremony which started at about 10:30 Friday morning shortly after the out-gone Governor arrive the stadium to hand-over the realms of power to his successor, Alhaji Abubarkar Sani Sadiq Bello of the APC.

The arrival into the arena by Babangida Aliyu soon changed the atmosphere as shouts of ‘Barawo’, ‘ole’ (thief) as he mounted the podium to greet the mammoth crowd who were present to catch a glimpse of change in baton of leadership in the state.

The sins of Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu according to findings bothered on some policies and programmes of his administration, including the alleged N52b debt left behind as claimed by the in-coming APC government.

In the same vein, pandemonium broke out at the venue of the inauguration of the governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, as miscreants stoned the convoy of the Emir of Zaria, Shehu Idris.

Violence erupted when miscreants numbering in their hundreds entered the venue of the governor’s inauguration at the Muritala Square and on sighting the Emir, one of the youths shouted that the Emir was not in support of the governor and as such was not supposed to be at the venue of his swearin-in.

With that, other youths around resorted to stoning the Emir. It took the intervention of security personnel, who fired tear gas, for the situation to be brought under control.

The event which witnessed a large turnout of supporters who had come to witness the swearing in of the governor was disrupted as dignitaries and supporters scampered for safety.

As at the time of filling this report youths were still seen treking down to the venue of the event.
