Former Nigeria international, Taju Disu, does not believe current Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, is better than his predecessor, Stephen Keshi.
He feels the former Juventus and Borussia Dortmund midfielder only became the national team’s boss owing to the Illfeeling between Keshi and the Nigeria Football Federation.
Keshi was sacked on July 5, after the NFF’s Disciplinary Committee investigated various allegations levelled against him, one of which was his alleged application for the then vacant coaching position of the Ivoirian national team.
Keshi, a former Mali and Togo national team coach, has since taken the NFF to court for ‘wrongful dismissal and defamation’ and has demanded a billion naira in compensation.
Disu feels the NFF should have left the 53-year-old to continue as the coach of the Super Eagles rather than appointing a 40-year-old Oliseh who, in Disu’s opinion, is not better than the 2013 Africa Cup of Nationswinning coach.
“I don’t have anything against Oliseh but to be honest with you I don’t think his appointment was just at this time,” Disu told New Telegraph.
“Keshi had done well for the country but was let go because there was bad blood between him and the NFF. “It’s not because Oliseh is better than Keshi but because they just wanted Keshi out. And when they got their chance they took it and got rid of him.
“I wish Oliseh the very best of luck but he is not better than Keshi judging from their records and pedigree. And the sacking of Keshi was political,” Disu said.
Regardless of Disu’s misgivings about Oliseh’s coaching abilities, he believes the current Super Eagles coach should imbibe the habit of ensuring that only the best available players get to play for the national team.
Disu added: “He (Oliseh) should continue from where Keshi left off, liaise with the NFF and everyone that has been on ground and go ahead and get the best players to represent Nigeria. “No sentiments should be attached. He should just go out there and get the best players available to play for Nigeria. If he follows this approach, I am sure all will be well.”
