Ex-defence ministry worker petitions NHRC against Kwankwaso

A former Ministry of Defence worker, Mr. Giwa Oyakhiromen, has petitioned the National Human Rights Commission over a motor accident involving the convoy of Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State in which he suffered spinal cord injuries and lost four teeth.
Oyakhiromen, in his petition dated December 1, 2014, alleged that the accident occurred on February 27, 2004 at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, when Kwankwaso was the Minister of Defence.
The petitioner explained that he was on a motorcycle when a car in Kwankwaso’s convoy hit him, adding that he was admitted to the National Hospital, Abuja, where he was treated for six weeks during which he regained his health.
However in 2013, the petitioner said the pains from the effects of the injuries resurfaced and he had to go back to the hospital for further treatment.
He therefore pleaded with the commission to assist him in getting financial support from Kwankwaso to enable him to undergo a surgical operation to relieve the pains.
Oyakhiromen stated that he had so far spent over N1.5m on his health, adding that he needs N4m for the medical procedure that was recommended by the doctors.
He explained that he had earlier written two letters to the governor for assistance, but received no response.
The petition reads, “For eight years, I felt nothing until February 2013, when the effect of the accident re-occurred. I had to go back to National Hospital for treatment. I spent a lot of money on tests,  X-rays, and drugs and I was going for physiotherapy.
“What has prompted this letter is the re-occurrence  of the pain in a ferocious dimension. The problem started on April 2, 2014; it was a terrifying time of pains and agony, I couldn’t stand, sit or walk. I would want the commission to assist me in getting financial assistance from the governor.”
