Apparently affected by the activities of sycophants during his regime as the governor of Ebonyi State, the immediate past Governor of the state, Martin Elechi has advised his successor, Chief Dave Umahi to be careful to avoid being misled by sycophants.
He urged the new Governor to analyse every advice giving to him by those who may claim to be his friends and supporters pretending to offer him advice to succeed.
Elechi spoke Sunday at his Echi-Alike country home in a chat with newsmen during a reception organised in his honour.
‘’My successor, Umahi should give people the freedom to agree or disagree with him; to say their minds without pretending otherwise sycophants will deceive him and it is not good. He should be forthright with the people and analyse every advise and make sure that he is not misled by sycophants because there are many sycophants out there,” he said.
He said he could have not avoided the handover ceremony at the Abakaliki Township Stadium at the weekend despite the warning in some quarters not to attend the event to avoid being booed.
He said: “Booing is part of the democratic right of the people. They are free to hold any opinion and express it within the limits of the law.
“I’m not the only person who has been booed, it depends on how you react, how you take it. My conscience which represents the voice of God in me cannot be shaking by human activities, by intrigues because I remain steadfast to the dictate of my conscience believing that God is the protector of everybody. If they boo at me so be it because I had nothing shameful as to be booed’’.
Elechi noted that he did not borrow foolishly during his reign as the Governor of the state, adding that by the end of July this year, the N16billion he had borrowed from the capita market will be liquidated.
