Nigeria's Asisat Oshoala made her debut for the Liverpool Ladies but her presence wasn't enough for the Reds to win their first game of the league against the newly promoted Sunderland ladies.
The Reds got the FA Women’s Super League started on a negative note with a 1-2 home loss to newly Sunderland Ladies on Wednesday.
The Super Falcons striker, who joined the WSL 1 side from Rivers Angels was substituted in the 73rd minutes of the game but failed to find the back of the net.
Asisat moved away from the Nigerian women's leahue as a sort-after follwing her exploits at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup and player of the tournament performance at the Africa Women’s Championship in Namibia.
However, she had only one high point worthy of note in the first 45 minutes as described by the commentary:
"The Reds went close to equalizing before the break as Martha Harris and Asisat Oshoala arrived late at the back post. It fell to the Nigerian, who snatched at the chance and struck wide of the target.”
"Liverpool gave a first start to Nigerian striker Asisat Oshoala, the first African player to play in the WSL, and she had the Reds’ best chance of the first half but shot wide.”- BBC
"Oshoala almost equalized when she cut in from the left and sent a driven right-footed strike on target, but Laws was once again at hand to prevent the leveler.” the match report read. Matt Beard replaced the young Nigerian and must now get herself prepared for the next game against Birmingham City Ladies.
