Official: Dortmund complete Januzaj loan swoop

The Belgium international announced his move to the Bundesliga in a bid for first-team football after limited playing time at Old Trafford

Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj has completed a season-long loan move to Borussia Dortmund.

The 20-year-old has seen his chances of first-team football at Old Trafford restricted under Louis van Gaal and he has now joined the Bundesliga side until the end of the season, where he will wear number nine.

He told the club's official website: “Borussia Dortmund is a big club and the fans are supposed to be unbelievable here. I want to achieve big things with this team.”

Januzaj had initially announced his intention to stay at the club after scoring the winning goal against Aston Villa, in what was his first league start since February, announcing his desire to "fight for his place".

The Belgium international, who joins former United midfielder Shinji Kagawa at the Westlfalenstadion, becomes the seventh summer arrival at the current Bundesliga table toppers.

UN warns over EU migrant deaths

The UN has said “much more is required” to prevent the deaths of migrants fleeing to Europe after hundreds were reported dead in recent days.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for a “collective political response” to avert “a crisis of solidarity”.

He called on states involved to “expand safe and legal channels of migration”.

On Thursday 71 people, thought to be Syrians, were found dead in a lorry in Austria. Some 200 others are feared dead after two boats sank off Libya, reports the BBC.

Ban said he was “horrified and heartbroken” at the latest loss of life.

“A large majority of people undertaking these arduous and dangerous journeys are refugees fleeing from places such as Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said.

“The international community must also show greater determination in resolving conflicts and other problems that leave people little choice but to flee,” he added.

Ban called on nations to observe international law on asylum requests, and not to “force people to return to places from which they have fled if there is a well-founded fear of persecution… This is not only a matter of international law; it is also our duty as human beings.”

He said: “This is a human tragedy that requires a determined collective political response. It is a crisis of solidarity, not a crisis of numbers.”

Ban also urged more action against people smugglers, a call echoed by White House spokesman Josh Earnest.

“The violence and instability in North Africa and the Middle East isn’t just destabilising the immediate region but is starting to have a destabilising impact on other regions of the world too, including in Europe,” Earnest said.

Some 200 people are feared to have drowned after two boats capsized on Thursday as they tried to cross from Zuwara, west of Tripoli in Libya, to Italy.

About 100 bodies have already been found and Libyan workers are continuing to search for 100 other people who are still unaccounted for.

Some survivors were rescued having spent the night in the water, clinging to life jackets.

While most of the victims of Thursday’s capsizes are thought to be from Syria and African countries, a Bangladeshi diplomat told the BBC that at least five Bangladeshi nationals, including a six-month-old baby, were among the dead.

Police in Italy detained 10 suspected traffickers after a separate incident in which 52 people were found dead in the hold of a ship off the coast of Libya on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Hungarian police said they had arrested four people over the discovery of the bodies of 71 migrants, thought to be Syrians, in an abandoned lorry in Austria, near the Hungarian border.

The victims were 59 men, eight women and four children who are thought to have been dead for about two days.

Officials said the victims probably died after suffocating in the vehicle, before it crossed into Austria from Hungary. Among the victims was a girl aged between one and two years old.

70 bodies of migrants found in a meat truck

In another indication of the worsening migrant crisis in Europe, an abandoned meat truck full of 70 bodies of migrants was found on the side of a highway in eastern Austria on Thursday morning Aug. 27. The truck was found on a motorway near the borders with Slovakia and Hungary by an Austrian patrol with fluids from the decomposing bodies seeping from its back.

The refrigerated truck had Hungarian number plates and the driver was nowhere to be seen. According to Associated Press, the truck was emblazoned with the logo of a Slovakian chicken processing company, Hyza, whose parent company, Agrofert Holding , said the truck was sold in 2014.
"One can maybe assume that the deaths occurred one-and-a-half to two days ago,” Hans Peter Doskozil, police chief in the province of Burgenland, told a news conference, adding that "many things" indicated the migrants were already dead when the truck crossed the border.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a summit on the West Balkans in Vienna:
"We are of course all shaken by the appalling news. This reminds us that we must tackle quickly the issue of immigration and in a European spirit that means in a spirit of solidarity – and find solutions."
According to local media, the migrants died of suffocation after being trapped in the truck's trailer. Meanwhile, a manhunt has been launched to find the driver who is suspected of smuggling the dead refugees into the country.

UK air shows go on after crash

A host of air shows will take place over the UK bank holiday weekend with alterations to their schedules following the Shoreham plane crash.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) banned vintage jets from carrying out “high-energy acrobatics” over land after a plane plummeted on to the A27.

The Clacton Airshow is among those going ahead after Saturday’s crash.

Formal identification of the victims has begun following the recovery of “almost all of the remains”.

Police believe it is likely 11 people were killed when a vintage jet plummeted to the ground, crashing into traffic, reports the BBC.

Four victims have been named by friends or family and the relatives of two other missing men have appealed for help.

West Sussex coroner Penny Schofield said: “Recovering all the remains has been a very slow and painstaking operation, but it has been necessary to ensure we establish, without doubt, individual positive identifications.”

She has met with the families to explain the process and, once identification is complete, inquests will be opened into the deaths.

During the air show, pilot Andy Hill failed to complete a loop manoeuvre immediately before the Hawker Hunter Jet crashed during a display.

On Wednesday, Brighton and Hove NHS Foundation Trust said he remained in a critical but stable condition.

The crash prompted new restrictions being put in place by the CAA regulator, which led to the CarFest South event in Hampshire cancelling its air display programme.

British IS hacker believed dead in US drone strike

US officials say they are in the final stages of confirming the death of a British computer hacker allegedly killed in a drone strike in Syria.

Junaid Hussain from Birmingham has been described as a key operator for so-called Islamic State allegedly involved in targeting new recruits for the organisation.

The 21-year-old was said last month to have been number three on the Pentagon’s “kill list” of IS targets and is thought to have fled Britain to travel to Syria in 2013, reports Sky News.

A US official was quoted as saying they have a “high level of confidence” he has been killed.

A strike specifically targeted Hussain while he was travelling in a vehicle in Syria, sources were said to have told CNN.

In an exclusive report Sky News went undercover and contacted Hussain and his jihadi wife using anonymous online messaging services.

Sending us detailed guidebooks, they urged our fictional characters to form gangs and to create a British Islamic State over a long period.

He allegedly told the investigator: “It will be big. We will hit the kuffar (unbelievers) hard InshAllah. Hit their soldiers in their own land. InshAllah. Soldiers that served in Iraq and Afghanistan will be present. Jump in the crowd and detonate the bomb.

“They think they can kill Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan then come back to the UK and be safe. We’ll hit them hard InshAllah.”

Claims of Hussain’s death have yet to be confirmed by British authorities.

In 2012 he was jailed for six months after making hoax calls to a counter-terror hotline.

He also admitted publishing Tony Blair’s address book the year before and was a member of TeaMpOisoN, a group which claimed responsibility for 1,400 hacking offences.

ISIS releases images of the ancient temple in Palmyra before and after destruction

ISIS group released images on Tuesday showing the destruction of the ancient temple of Baal Shamin in the Unesco-listed Syrian city of Palmyra. Baal Shamin was built in 17 AD and was expanded under the reign of Roman emperor Hadrian in 130 AD.

Man killed by sheriff's deputy at courthouse for scaling a wall of the White House

A man who scaled a wall of the White House 5 months ago was killed in a Pennsylvania courthouse on Tuesday after slashing a sheriff's deputy with a knife.

Curtis Smith, 33, entered the lobby of the Chester County Justice Center in West Chester shortly before noon, according to District Attorney Tom Hogan.


Gunshots rang out inside the courthouse at 201 W Market St. in West Chester, Pennsylvania around 11: 50 a.m. Tuesday after an armed man charged past metal detectors leading to a lockdown of the building.
"Curtis Smith, from Coatesville, came directly into the justice center and pulled out a knife and attacked a deputy sheriff, slashing him," District Attorney Tom Hogan said.

Another deputy then opened fire, striking Smith, said Hogan. Smith, 34, received first aid at the scene before being taken to Paoli Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
A uniformed man with a bandaged hand could be seen on a stretcher being loaded into an ambulance. Hogan said that sheriff's deputy was treated for wounds to his arm and hand.

Luckily no one else was hurt.

"The sheriffs did their jobs, the lockdown went perfectly," said Hogan

Hogan identified Smith as the same man who allegedly jumped the outer perimeter of the White House back in March and was detained by Secret Service.
Smith was set to face burglary, assault and harassment charges at a preliminary hearing -- that has been continued multiple times -- in October stemming from a May domestic assault arrest, according to court records. He also pleaded guilty in late May to traffic violation.

Attorney Lewis Hannah III, who represented Smith in the domestic violence case, called his client's death "really tragic."
"He was a truck driver," Hannah said. "He worked every day, had a family, a wife, you know, you would have never have thought.

Hannah said his client was supposed to obtain counseling before the next hearing and that's why Smith went to the courthouse Tuesday. "He had no terrorist claim or anything like that," he said.
Court staff heard at least three gunshots coming from the lobby, said Sara Finneran, a retired staff support employee who was visiting her former coworkers at the time of the shooting.

UK seeks data on Quebec crash victims

The Foreign Office says it is “urgently working” with Canadian authorities to learn the identity of the victims of a plane crash in which six people died.

Some reports say four of those who died were British.

The Beaver seaplane took off on Sunday from Tadoussac, Quebec, on the north shore of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

It crashed shortly after in a wooded area in Les Bergeronnes. Investigators have been hindered by bad weather and the inaccessible nature of the terrain.

Tadoussac is located about 500km (310 miles) north-east of Montreal.

According to the AP news agency, police said on Monday that all six passengers aboard the Air Saguenay plane had been found.

Their bodies are reported to have been handed over the coroner’s office, reports the BBC.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: “Following a plane crash in Les Bergeronnes, Canada, we are urgently working with local authorities to establish the identity of those on board.”

Le Journal de Quebec newspaper named the pilot as Romain Desrosiers and one of the victims as Emilie Delaitre, a French woman visiting the country from the Cote d’Azur.

CBC News reports that the aircraft was built in 1956 but, according to Air Saguenay, had a “brand new” engine.

AP also reported that an Air Saguenay official said the seaplane was taking part in a routine sightseeing flight, which was only supposed to last 20 minutes.

The conditions were excellent at the time when the plane crashed on Sunday, the report added.

Journalist arrested in Thailand over body armour

Thai authorities have arrested a Hong Kong-based photojournalist for carrying body armour and helmet.

Anthony Kwan travelled to Bangkok to cover the shrine bombing that killed 20 people, including two Hong Kong residents last week.

He was stopped at Suvarnabhumi International Airport while returning to Hong Kong Sunday night and charged with possession of an illegal weapon.

Kwan was arraigned in court Monday on the charge, which carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.

Thailand’s 1987 Arms Control Act prohibits the possession of military equipment, including body armour, without a licence.

The arrest raised concern over the safety of journalists covering dangerous situations, reports dpa.

Two foreign journalists were killed in Thailand while covering violent political clashes in Bangkok during 2010.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye asks North for apology

South Korean President Park Geun-hye has said cross-border propaganda broadcasts will continue until Pyongyang apologises for landmines that injured two South Korean soldiers.

North Korea has threatened to use force to stop the broadcasts, ratcheting up tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

High-level talks to resolve the issue have continued through a second night.

Both country’s militaries are on alert after a brief exchange of fire at the border on Thursday.

North Korea denies laying the landmines which maimed the soldiers earlier this month as they were patrolling the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the heavily fortified border, reports the BBC.

It also denies shelling the South on Thursday, an incident which prompted return artillery fire from the South.

“We need a clear apology and measures to prevent a recurrence of these provocations and tense situations,” said Ms Park according to a statement released by her office.

“Otherwise, this government will take appropriate steps and continue loudspeaker broadcasts.”

South Korea resumed the propaganda broadcasts along the DMZ earlier this month, after after an 11-year hiatus, in apparent retaliation for the landmine attack.

The talks that began on Saturday have, for the time being, subdued heated rhetoric of imminent war. However, South Korea’s military had said that the North is preparing for a fight, moving troops and submarines to the border.

The two Koreas remain technically at war, because the 1950-1953 conflict ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty.

Loudspeakers and psychological warfare

In 2004, South Korea and North Korea reached an agreement to dismantle their propaganda loudspeakers at the border.

The broadcasts were part of a programme of psychological warfare, according to South Korean newspaper Korea Times, to deliver outside news so that North Korean soldiers and border-area residents could hear it.

IS blows up UNESCO World Heritage site in Syria

Islamic State militants have destroyed Palmyra’s ancient temple of Baalshamin, Syrian officials and activists say.

Syria’s head of antiquities was quoted as saying the temple was blown up on Sunday. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that it happened one month ago.

IS took control of Palmyra in May, sparking fears the group might demolish the Unesco World Heritage site.

The group has destroyed several ancient sites in Iraq.

IS “placed a large quantity of explosives in the temple of Baalshamin today [Sunday] and then blew it up causing much damage to the temple,” Syrian antiquities chief Maamoun Abdulkarim told AFP news agency.

“The cella (inner area of the temple) was destroyed and the columns around collapsed,” he said.

Residents who had fled from Palmyra also said IS had planted explosives at the temple, although they had done it about one month ago, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, reports the BBC.

Palmyra is famed for its well-preserved Greco-Roman ruins.

The BBC World Service arts correspondent Vincent Dowd says the temple built nearly 2,000 years ago was primarily a Roman era artefact. It was dedicated to the Phoenician god of storms and fertilising rains.

He said it was “extremely important” and had been “almost totally intact”.

Last month, IS published photos of militants destroying what it said were artefacts looted at Palmyra.

A week ago, it emerged that the archaeologist who had looked after Palmyra’s ruins for four decades had been beheaded by the militant group.

Abdulkarim said the 81-year-old had refused to tell IS where some treasures had been hidden to try and save them.

The group has also published photos of what they said was the destruction of two Islamic shrines near Palmyra, which they described as “manifestations of polytheism”.

UK air crash death toll rises to 11, as Swiss planes collide

The death toll from the Shoreham air crash where a vintage jet plummeted into traffic on a main trunk road is thought to have risen to 11, police have said.
Specialist recovery teams have begun recovering bodies from the site after the crash on Saturday, when the number of deaths was initially given as seven.
It comes as the first victims of the accident were named by their families.
Investigators are still combing the crash site in West Sussex, reports the BBC.
Assistant Chief Constable Steve Barry, from Sussex Police, said the 11 were “highly likely” to have died in the incident.
They include Matt Jones, 24, and Worthing United footballer Matthew Grimstone, 23, whose families have confirmed they have died.
And in a related development, at least one person has been killed after two small planes collided in mid-air during an airshow in northern Switzerland, police say.
The accident occurred at 11:30 (09:30 GMT) at Dittingen, near Basel.
Swiss media say one of the pilots managed to escape by parachute.
The Swiss accident comes a day after 11 people died and several were injured when a military jet participating in an airshow in the UK crashed onto a busy road in the south of the country.

Report: Emirati forces in Yemen free British hostage

United Arab Emirates forces based in Yemen’s port city of Aden have freed a British hostage who had been held by al Qaeda, state news agency WAM said on Sunday.

The hostage, who went missing in February 2014, was taken to Abu Dhabi on a military plane on Saturday night, the agency said.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan spoke to British Prime Minister David Cameron to tell him about the release on Saturday, WAM added.

British embassy in Tehran reopens four years after closure

The British embassy in Iran has reopened, nearly four years after it was closed.

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond is in Tehran with a delegation of business leaders for a ceremony to mark the reopening. Iran is simultaneously reopening its embassy in London.

The UK embassy was closed in 2011 after it was stormed by protesters during a demonstration against sanctions.

Hammond is the first UK foreign secretary to visit Iran since 2003, reports the BBC.

The visit comes weeks after Iran reached a deal with six world powers aimed at curbing its nuclear programme.

On arriving in Tehran, Hammond tweeted: “First British Ministerial visit since 2003. Historic moment in UK-Iran relations.”

Earlier, he said the the nuclear deal and the election of Hassan Rouhani as president in June 2013 – who has pledged greater engagement with the Western World – had been “important milestones” in the improved relations between the two countries.

He said: “Reopening our embassies is a key step to improved bilateral relations.

“In the first instance, we will want to ensure that the nuclear agreement is a success, including by encouraging trade and investment once sanctions are lifted.

“Britain and Iran should also be ready to discuss the challenges we both face including terrorism, regional stability, the spread of Isil in Syria and Iraq, counter-narcotics and migration.”

Initially, the embassy will be headed by a charge d’affaires, Ajay Sharma, but Hammond said an agreement on upgrading to full ambassador status is expected to be reached in the coming months.

The reopening of the embassy will be marked by a ceremony attended by Hammond, Sharma, and representatives of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the wider diplomatic community.

Guiness World Records recognizes 112yr old Japanese as the world's oldest man

Yasutaro Koide, a 112-year-old resident of Nagoya, Japan, who recommends not smoking, drinking and avoiding stress as his secret to a long life, was on Friday August 21 officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest man. Koide was born on March 13, 1903, and worked as a tailor. He became the oldest man with the death of Sakari Momoi of Tokyo in July at age 112.

Three of his seven children, two of his nine grandchildren and one great grandchild attended a ceremony at a nursing home where he was given a plaque and a green vase. Koike was beaming, but teary-eyed as those attending applauded.

"The best thing is to not overdo,” he said. He also recommended not smoking or drinking, and said his favourite food is bread. Koike also recommends “enjoying everything,” according to local reports that say he can read the newspaper without glasses.

The newspaper Chunichi Shimbun quoted a granddaughter, Aya Kikuchi, saying her grandfather once tended to be very strict about manners. “He was very stubborn, but he got nicer with age,” she said.

“His lifestyle is one that avoids stress.” One of the world’s fastest-ageing countries, Japan has about 54,000 centenarians. So many, in fact, the government is reportedly considering scrapping or scaling back a 52-year-old programme that presents each person reaching the century mark with an ornate sake dish and letter of congratulations from the prime minister.

The world’s oldest person is Susannah Mushatt Jones of Brooklyn, New York, who celebrated her 116th birthday on Monday.

Faces of the US military troops that stopped the train massacre in France

Spencer Stone, (pictured above) who is part of the U.S. Air Force, spotted the 26-year-old Moroccan acting suspiciously and heard him trying to load his weapon in the toilet of the high speed train between Amsterdam and Paris.

He was travelling with Oregon National Guard member Alek Skarlatos, 22, who was on leave and traveling through Europe at the time after returning from a tour in Afghanistan.

With the help of their friend Anthony Sadler, from Pittsburg, California, and fellow passenger British IT consultant Chris Norman, they managed to wrestle the attacker to the ground, stopping what could have been a deadly terrorist attack.


The terrorist, named in reports as Ayoub el-Qahzzani, had at least nine full magazines of ammunition holding almost 300 rounds. He was arrested by police at a train station in Arras and taken to hospital where he is now in custody.

He came out of the toilet brandishing the gun and opened fire, wounding two people on board. Fortunately, the hero passengers were nearby and overpowered him.


'As he was cocking it to shoot it, Alek just yells, 'Spencer, go!' And Spencer runs down the aisle,' Sadler said. 'Spencer makes first contact, he tackles the guy, Alek wrestles gun away from him, and the gunman pulls out a box cutter and slices Spencer a few times. And the three of us beat him until he was unconscious.'
'The gunman never said a word,' he added.

Skarlatos described Stone's heroic actions to ITV News in the aftermath of the attack.

'Spencer ran a good ten metres to get to the guy and we didn't that his gun not working or anything like that,' he said. 'Spencer just ran anyway and if anybody would have gotten shot it would have been Spencer for sure and we're very lucky that nobody got killed, especially Spencer.'

He added that he was in 'good spirits' in hospital, but was still shocked by what unfolded.

British conman lied about having been asked to assist with rescue of Chibok girls so he could lure women into bed

49-year-old Beau Plantard pretended he was a veteran paratrooper who had once been asked to assist with the rescue of Nigerian Chibok girls kidnapped by Boko Haram in a bid to sleep with women.

Plantard who also goes by the name John Pugh, claimed he was a Special Air Service (Sas) hero and worked as Princess Diana’s bodyguard.

According to MailOnline, Plantard would play friend's videos which apparently showed him jumping out of planes and even had a tattoo of Parachute Regiment-style wings emblazoned across his shoulder blade, with the word 'airborne' inked above.

One of his ex-girlfriends has also claimed he is a serial love rat, who began dating her while he was still in a relationship with his partner of 17 years.


Second World War historian Amy Jelfs, 36, who dated Plantard for around five months, said she broke up with the ex-serviceman after rumbling his charade, branding him as 'disrespectful' and 'manipulative'.

She told MailOnline:


“He just told a pack of lies from day one. He has his whole village thinking he is some sort of war hero. I wasn't even impressed or particularly bothered that he was in the SAS, but he would just go on about it constantly: every day he had a new story to tell. He'd apparently been all over the world on secret missions. He's an awful man and, more than anything, it is so disrespectful to serving troops. That is why he needs to be exposed.”

Ms Jelfs met Plantard while they were both members at the Utopia gym in Evesham, Worcestershire. Because her ex-boyfriend had served with the Army for more than 20 years, she did not find Plantard's elaborate stories particularly impressive. But she says he persisted in regaling her with exotic tales about his alleged time in the SAS. He even reportedly told the mother of one of her friend's that he had been a security guard for Princess Diana.

"He was charming and manipulative,' Ms Jelfs said."When he told me he was away in Nigeria, he was actually on holiday with his partner. He once declared to the whole gym that he was going for surgery to have a piece of shrapnel removed from his bottom, which wasn't the case at all."
When Ms Jelfs started to get suspicious, she began asking some of her friends in the Army whether they had heard of Plantard. They all claimed that they had - but that he had not been in the SAS. She said:
"I had my suspicions and then he would just come out with more and more weird stuff. I started digging around myself and realized he wasn't telling the truth. As for his tattoo, it's hideous and wonky. That also made me suspicious."
Ms Jelfs was eventually contacted by Plantard's long-term partner, who found out he had been dating another woman. She then confronted him at his home and the pair broke up. But days later, Plantard started seeing Sam Joubert, a 40-year-old dental nurse and part-time Zumba instructor, to whom he fed the same imaginative stories. When Ms Jelfs warned Ms Joubert about Plantard's ways, he reported her to police for harassment. Ms Jelfs said:
"I just wanted to warn Sam that he was dangerous. She has got a little girl. He lied to me from the beginning. He never mentioned he was in a relationship. He said he had been in the Paras and always used to make out as though he had a traumatic time."
