Nigeria’s national men’s basketball team, D’Tigers made history Sunday night when they finally got the better of continental basketball powerhouse, Angola to lift their first ever Afrobasket title and in so doing also secured Africa’s lone ticket to the basketball event of next summer’s Olympics in Brazil.
Incidentally, the victory in Tunis, the Tunisian capital, which hosted the continental hoops championship, was the first time in nine meetings that Nigeria would be the South African nation.
Sunday night’s was also the fourth time that Nigeria would be reaching the final of the premier basketball event on the continent, having lost the previous three outings.
Hosts Tunisia placed third after beating Senegal in the classification match.
At the end of the tournament, two members of D’Tigers, along with one Angolan, a Senegalese and Tunisian made the Afribasket 2015 Top 5 Team.
Nigeria’s Chamberlin Oguchi was voted MVP of the tournament.
