Sanusi to Buhari: Prosecute ex-minister who ‘stole’ $6bn
Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to effect the prosecution of the former minister under former President Goodluck Jonathan alleged to have stashed over $6 billion in a foreign account.
Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State recently disclosed that United States officials during a visit to Washington to the Buhari-led delegation that a minister in the Jonathan administration made away with over $6 billion.
Speaking while hosting members of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, led by its Executive Chairman, Muhuyi Magaji, who paid him a courtesy visit, the monarch lamented that if such amount was embezzled in some countries, such a country would definitely collapse.
He said: “It is disheartening to see that Nigeria is one of the countries in the world that is leading in corrupt practices. We should understand that fighting against corruption is not only for government, we all need to put our hands on deck.”
While bemoaning how contractors conduct their businesses under shoddy arrangements, he cited examples of how they (contractors) connived with some public office holders to siphon national resources with high level of impunity. “But with the high sense of responsibility and responsible doggedness of our dear President Muhammadu Buhari, I am keenly optimistic that things will change for the better. I am very hopeful that Mr. President will do everything possible to fight corruption to a standstill,” Sanusi emphasised.
The Emir called on the commission to clearly understand that their work needed collaboration with commitment from other sectors of the society, stressing that the work was beyond how they saw it.
“Your work should not only look at what is happening at bottom position in the society. You should start from the top that whoever is found wanting he or she should be dealt with severely. “You should also not consider party affiliation while doing your work.
If you want to succeed in your newly assigned responsibility you must be ready to deal with corrupt officials. Fighting against corruption starts from the top not from the bottom,” the emir charged. Earlier the Executive Chairman said that they were at the palace to seek the blessing and guidance of the emir.
