The faceoff between the workers of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri and their Medical Director, Dr. Angela Uwakwem, which had grounded the centre for close to three months, has been resolved with the Medical Director asked to proceed on compulsory leave.
Thursday, national leaders of the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) in a rally at the FMC, Owerri declared that the strike action over while announcing the immediate resumption of work at the facility.
NUAHP National President, Comrade Obinna Ogbonna traced the beginning of the crisis that rocked the facility to May 15th, 2015 and commended the workers for their courage and steadfastness even in the face of intimidations.
He informed that Dr. Mrs. Angela Uwakwem has been directed, in a meeting of all health and labour stakeholders convened by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, to proceed on compulsory leave while a fact finding committee headed by a representative from the Ministry of Labour and Productivity will commence investigations into the crises that engulfed the centre.
Part of the committee’s terms of reference include taking another look at the petition sent by the union to Mr. President referenced HU/GFM/5/09 dated June 3, 2015 on Gross Financial Misconduct and High Handedness of the Medical Director, FMC, Owerri and any other relevant document submitted.
Speaking Comrade Samuel Nwokeji, an official of the hospital who is also the Public Relations Officer (2) of NUAHP, FMC Owerri chapter, said that workers have been asked to resume work and revert to their civil service operational code in diligence and quality service delivery for which FMC is known. He informed that an Acting Medical Director has been appointed in the person of Dr. Bennett Ajuonuma, who was until his new appointment, was the Head of Clinical Services (HCS).
