A member of the House of Representatives, Ayo Omidiran, has said that the Super Falcons need a foreign coach to make the expected impact at the global stage. Omidiran told our correspondent that the country was in need of a quality coach to handle the Women’s national team.
“It was very obvious that the coach that took the team to Canada (Edwin Okon) was technically deficient. He had no answer to the tactics of the opposition. It was the sheer guts of the girls that earned us the 3-3 draw in the first match against Sweden during the World Cup, “she said. Omidiran also noted that luck of the draw affected the fortunes of the Super Falcons in Canada.
“We played against three tops teams in the world. US is number two, Sweden number five and Australia number 10. It was tough but we did not have a good coach and our preparation was not the best.
“I still have to commend the girls for putting in their best. We have quality players in the team and they really fought hard in all the matches. “Look at the encounter against the USA.
It ended 1-0 and the USA went ahead to win the trophy. I believe the difference between the top countries and our girls is not much now but we need a better technical approach to compete well with them” The former member of the NFF argued that it was important to unravel the reason why the girls fail on the global stage after inspiring performance in Africa. “There is a disconnect and if you look at it closely, it is tactical. Okon is not the person that will achieve that.
I support the NFF for thinking of a foreign coach. If this can be done to the male why not the female?” she asked. Falcons crashed out in the first round of the just concluded World Cup losing two games and recording a draw.
