Keeps tab on Iwobi, Akpom, Ujah
The current form of Manchester City attacking midfielder, Kelechi Iheanacho, has given Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, enough encouragement as he plans to feature the Flying Eagles star alongside Chelsea midfielder, Mikel Obi, when Nigeria take onTanzania. Iheanacho was City’s most impressive performer in the Citizens’ opening day International Champions Cup victory over AS Roma in Melbourne, Australia, as he scored a superb goal and also provided an assist right out of the top drawer for new signing, Raheem Sterling, as the Italians were put to the sword.
Although the 18-year-old played for just 13 minutes against the most glamorous football club in the world, Real Madrid, in City’s second game of the tournament last Friday, he returned to the starting line-up in Monday’s massive win over the Vietnamese national side.
Iheanacho provided a superb assist for Sterling’s second goal of the game and his side’s fourth in the 8-1 drubbing of the Asian side. He also won the penalty which Aleksander Kolarov converted for City’s fifth goal of the game, New Telegraph scooped that Oliseh had been impressed with the youngster’s display in his club’s pre-season games and would prefer to pair him with the experienced Mikel in the Eagles’ midfield. “Oliseh prefers Mikel to play in the defensive position like he does at Chelsea and having Iheanacho in the attacking midfield position while searching for another player to feature as an enforcer ina three-man midfield plan,” a close confidant of the coach told New Telegraph.
“He (Oliseh) has also been impressed with the displays of (Chelsea’s) Victor Moses and Arsenal’s Chuba Akpom and Alex Iwobi who were in action for their respective clubs in pre-season matches at the weekend.” Moses inspired the English champions to victory over PSG in a pre-season friendly at the weekend, scoring the equaliser for the Blues in the 65th minute to cancel out Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 25th opener for the French champions who went on to lose the game on penalties after the game ended 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes.
Iwobi also had an impressive display with the 19-year old scoring Arsenal’s third goal in the 6-0 annihilation of Olympique Lyon in their opening fixture of the 2015 Emirates Cup on Saturday while Akpom also showed great impact at the tournament which Arsenal went on to win. “Antony Ujah is also doing well with Werder Bremen, and a lot of discussions are going on to have some of our best youngsters from around the world feature for the Super Eagles, and the Nigeria Football Federation is on top of the matter,” the source added. Ujah scored his eighth goal of the pre-season campaign on Saturday in their 3-1 win over Sevilla.
