Grenade attacks kill four people in Burundi as elections loom

Grenade attacks in Burundi’s capital Bujumbura and towns to the north killed four people on Sunday night, the police said on Monday, stoking tensions before a parliamentary election next week and a presidential vote on July 15.

A grenade attack on a bar in Ngozi town north of Bujumbura killed four people and wounded 27, while a blast in the northern town of Kirundo near a bank injured two people, Reuters quoted police spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye as saying.

A grenade attack in the Musaga district of Bujumbura also wounded one police officer, he said.
