Enyeama, Onazi train for Chad

Super Eagles goalkeeper and captain of the team, Vincent Enyeama, on Wednesday led eight of the 15 invited foreign-based players to a training session preparatory to the Africa Cup of National match against Chad.

The Eagles are expected to arrive in Kaduna on Sunday ahead of the AFCON qualifying match against Chad billed for June 13 at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium.

The overseas-based players are Leon Balogun, Ogenyi Onazi, Odion Ighalo, John Ogu, Steve Ukoh, William Troost-Ekong, Babatunde Michael and Anderson Esiti, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The training session held at the Abuja National Stadium was conducted in the rain under the supervision of coach Stephen Keshi.

The Media Officer of the team, Toyin Ibitoye, said that the remaining players were expected to arrive in Abuja later on Wednesday night. He, however, said that Aaron Samuel and Ahmed Musa had the permission of the coach to arrive later than their teammates because of “some peculiar factors.”

And as the team prepared for the Wednesday training session, the four Warri Wolves players, led by Azubuike Egwuekwe, left the team’s camp to join their teammates for their continental engagement. The other players are Daniel Akpeyi, Solomon Kwambe and Gbolahan Salami.

The quartet is expected to feature for Wolves against AC Leopards of Congo Brazzaville in the second leg of CAF Confederation match on Saturday at the Warri City Stadium.

And as the FIFA corruption cases continue to unfold, ex- international, Segun Odegbami on Wednesday said Sepp Blatter’s notice to resign as FIFA President was a right step to restore confidence in the world football governing body.

Odegbami said that the resignation would facilitate unfettered investigation into alleged corruption in the body

On Tuesday at a news conference, the 79-year-old Swiss said he would resign and called for an extraordinary FIFA Congress “as soon as possible” to elect a successor.

“Confederation of Africa Football should also be visited next; that place would make the corruption in FIFA look like child’s play,” the former Green Eagles player said.

Another former Nigeria international, Felix Owolabi, commended Blatter for taking the path of honour by throwing in the towel.

“It was the best option for Blatter in the circumstance and it was a good thing that he toed the path of honour,” he said.

He said it was unfortunate that the world football governing body was embroiled in a corruption saga.

Taiwo Ogunjobi, a former General-Secretary, Nigeria Football Federation, said the FIFA president should have resigned before the election.

“It was unfortunate that he waited that long before resigning his position despite the fact that corruption allegations had been on in FIFA for the past two years,” he said.

Ogunjobi said that it was time to clean up FIFA and restore its battered image.
