Veteran boxer wants Ambode to revive schools’ boxing tournament

Lagos – A 77-year-old boxing judge, Lagbat Timson, on Monday urged the Lagos State Governor-Elect, Akinwunmi Ambode, to revive the state’s zonal schools boxing competition.

Timson said in Lagos that the tournament would provide a platform for healthy competition and also to promote spirit of friendship among students.

“We are going with the name — New Breed Federation of Youths — to aid those who were part of it in the 1960s to remember what it used to be.

“It comprises many sports with students from the seven zones of the state — Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry, Somolu, Ikeja, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island competing for honours,” Timson told NAN after a one day clinic to select boxers organised by him.

He said the zonal contest would also help to instill discipline among youths as they would be compelled to observe the rules of the sport.

According to him, 40 boxers U-14 category have registered for the New Breed Federation of Youths.

Timson said that the success of the project would fulfill his dream of leaving a worthy legacy in boxing in the state.

He said other events lined up for the competition included youth exchange programmes, debates and drama.

“All these are part of the programme that can be used by youth for their development.

“Such events can be an integral part of the schools’ curriculum which are capable of producing boxing stars like Ogan Bassy and Obisan Nwampka.’’

Tthe competition was rested in the 1970s for what the organisers called lack of financial support from the state government.(NAN)
