Only regulars can save Keshi – Adepoju

As the qualifiers for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations approach, former Super Eagles player, Mutiu Adepoju, has advised national team coach, Stephen Keshi, to ensure that only players, who feature regularly for their clubs, are invited to the team.

Keshi returned to the Eagles on a two-year contract and will hope to surpass his performance in his first stint at the helms of affairs.

But with the recent form of the team, having lost to Uganda and drawn against South Africa in their last friendly matches, and with the team in the same group as record AFCON winners, Egypt, Tanzania and Chad, football experts have suggested ways to ensure the team qualify for the competition.

Adepoju, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said Keshi does not need redundant players in the team.

He said, “What Keshi should do is to invite players that are doing well and are relevant in their clubs. These are the players that play almost every week for their club and not those who are just there to add to the numbers.

“Players that play regularly for their clubs will enhance the competitiveness in the team. Also, players in competitive leagues should be the focus of the coach and not unknown players in obscure leagues. This will ensure that the competitive spirit in the Eagles is high.

“Competition needs to be high in the team so that players who are not up to the task would know that there is really no place for them.”

Adepoju, who was Keshi’s teammate, says Keshi should avoid squabbles with his players this time.
