Ogun threatens to sanction banks, errant bullion van drivers

The Ogun State Government has warned that henceforth it will take punitive measures against owners and operators of bullion van, who breach the minimum acceptable standard in their operations.
The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Adeoluwa Taiwo, gave the warning in his office in Abeokuta on Monday at a meeting with heads of banks operating in the state under the aegis of Bankers Forum.
This is in reaction to the killing of a 19-year-old carpentry apprentice, Gbenga Okesola, at OPIC Roundabout in Abeokuta last Thursday by a bullion van, driven by one Abayomi Komolafe, who is now standing trial for manslaughter.
Taiwo said, “Government will not take it lightly with any operator of bullion van, who drives without adequate consideration for other motorists and road users. Government places high premium on the lives of the residents of the state.
“We want you to note that the government of Ogun State takes serious exceptions to the conduct of your bullion van drivers, one of such that led to the death of a young man last Thursday.
“Henceforth, we will seriously take actions against any employee and the bank that fails to properly train such employee before they cause such havoc.”
Taiwo, who explained that government was not planning to ban commercial motorcycles popularly called okada, said it would ensure that their operations were fully regulated and monitored.
