Ogun teachers ask Amosun to remit cooperative deductions
Some teachers in Ogun State have called on Governor Ibikunle Amosun to remit the deductions the state government made from their salary accounts to their respective cooperative societies.
The teachers, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said the action of the state government had made life unbearable for them.
Our correspondent also learnt that there are a number of cooperative societies in the state, which many teachers chose voluntarily for savings and loans purposes.
A teacher, who claimed that she pays N42, 000 every month, lamented that she had not been able to secure any loan from her cooperative society as a result of the refusal of the state government to remit the money.
“We are really suffering because a new term has just started and I cannot pay my children’s tuition. Normally, I would have been entitled to a loan from my cooperative society, but when I approached the society, I was told that nothing has been remitted since last October,’’ she said.
Another teacher, who said he had been dodging his landlord over unpaid rent, appealed to the governor to release the funds to the appropriate quarters quickly.
He said the reason why he joined a cooperative society in early 2014 had been defeated.
The President of one of the cooperative societies in the state confirmed the allegations. The official, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said there could be no provision for loans until the state government settled the outstanding the allocation.
“According to the state government, allocation from the Federal Government is dwindling. Some of our members are dead and some cannot pay school fees for their children. The governor has said he can only pay net salary but we cannot give any loan now until payment is made,’’ he said
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Segun Odubela, on Thursday, declined to comments on the matter. Admitting that many civil servants in the state joined the societies voluntarily, he said only the secretary to the state government or Head of Service could talk on the issue.
