AfBA condemns Burundi coup attempt

The African Bar Association on Monday condemned the attempted coup in Burundi, describing it as a major setback for the sustenance of democratic governance in the Central African country.
The association in a statement signed by its President and Secretary, Hannibal Uwaifo and Flavania Charles, respectively, in Benin, however called on President Pierre Nkuruziza to set aside his third-term bid in the interest of the Burundians.
It also urged the President Nkuruziza to concentrate more on good governance that would reflect the aspirations of the over 10 million citizens of the country.
Burundi had recorded series of protests by thousands of Burundians over the third-term bid of the president that resulted in an attempted coup reported to have been masterminded by top military officers in the country last Wednesday.‎
AFBA, however, pointed out that the people of Burundi deserved peace and should not be subjected to avoidable crises that claim innocent lives, adding that it may press criminal charges against the perpetrators of the failed coup.‎
“We will not hesitate to press for criminal charges against those behind the attempted coup in Burundi at the International Criminal Court.
“AfBA is currently studying the development in Burundi with a view to ascertaining what next step to take in the forthcoming technical executive of the association,” it said.
