The Oyo State Police Command has deployed no fewer than 21,000 officers in different parts of the state ahead of the governorship and state House of Assembly elections.
The command also warned “violence-inclined” politicians, who were planning to foment trouble in the state if they lost the election, to desist from such or face the wrath of the law.
The state Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Katsina, who said this in a statement, added that any politician also found using police escort on the election day would be arrested and the escort withdrawn.
He said, “With the receipt of additional special forces, officers and men from the Federal Headquarters totalling 21,000 personnel, we assure members of the public that the command is adequately ready for the election.
“Intelligence at the disposal of the command also indicates that some disgruntled politicians have decided to hold nocturnal meetings in their premises and houses with criminal motive to cause breach of peace should they lose the election. The police warn that if the intelligence appears credible, we will not hesitate to bring them before the law.
“It is further warned that any politician found using police escort on the Election Day will be arrested and such escort withdrawn. We enjoin the people of Oyo State to come out en mass to exercise their franchise.”
Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, in a similar statement, enjoined people of the state to abide with the restriction of movement between 8am and 5pm on Saturday.
“The restriction of vehicular movement is ordered by the Inspector General of Police. Members of the public are warned to ensure strict compliance with this directive in their own interest as the CP would not hesitate to prosecute any violator of this order,” he said.
